Does anyone know what the stock price of a new exhaust is?

Mine is blowing just after the first joint (just on the first box) looking down from the tail pipes so I guess if there's a centre piece available that's what I would be looking at ?

Its the original exhaust - car has just turned over 72k so I am expecting it to go. Might be worth looking at a repair for the time being. Don't know if its the cat section that's gone - not too sure where that's located without getting it on a ramp

Well, we used to have a Daewoo and its exhaust went at 60K miles. However, have had several Toyotas in the family and all have done much more than 100K miles before the exhaust went. So I am guessing it will not be corrosion but possible damage of some sort. If you are just out of warranty from Lexus, may be they will be willing to help you with this so try calling them first. If not, then when you know which part you are looking for exactly try your local breakers or breakers eBay.

Try and get underneath and see or feel where it's blowing from. If its only small, try a patch/repair.

I used a dollop of instant metal (two pack material... That I got from Halfords a few years back) and it has worked a treat. Sals mx5 exhaust sounds sweet again, and it only took 20 minutes to do. Just put a board under the area to catch any drips and support it with tape whilst it cures (saves any marks on your drive...that is if its pavers)

Took car to ATS today (its only around the corner from where I work) so I thought I would get a quote on a new exhaust.

They do not stock the exhaust (didn't think they would) but asked them anyway - also asked if they could weld the hole, don't do that either. They would contact their supplier and call me back to let me know if they could source one.

I left there, leaving my phone number for a call back from the garage to let me know if they could get hold of one from their suppliers. I had the call about 20 minutes later and was told they cannot supply the exhaust. Its a Lexus supply only but they also said that their supplier told them that all the searches for the exhaust was coming up that it was a stainless steel one so should be under an extended warranty??!! I am pretty sure its not stainless (my last is200 had one but don't think this one does)

How can I tell? Also, for future reference, has anyone managed to buy an exhaust from one of these types of fitting centres?

I have bought some exhaust repair putty and will get under the car at the weekend to see what's what but I don't really want to apply this if its under warranty

Hi mate, just call your local Lexus dealer and they should be able to tell you if there is any warranty on it or not. If its corrosion then I believe it should be covered by 10 year Lexus anti-perforation warranty but again, best just to talk to Lexus about this first.

By all means try approaching Lexus. I'd be very surprised if they do say its warranted....given it is a 'consumable'.

You won't be able to get a exhaust from an exhaust centre....it is Lexus only. Least that's what I found when I had a snag with my 220d.

Generally ...stainless is not magnetic. However the rules on this bend a bit when stainless is shaped and welded. So the magnetic response should be poor ish.

Hope that helps.

Well ---- had a quote from Lexus on this part = holy crap £705 fitted.

I like the car but for a consumable item that's a bit steep - cant imagine what a full system would cost (well I can but not going to) Seriously considering getting rid. 1st bill and with tyres and brakes all round to do then its going to cost a small car to get all this done and with this part of the exhaust gone I wouldn't be surprised if the rest is on the way out.

Hello smart car !!

Go see a good quality welder...I would have expected it could be repaired.

Consider using a Lex specialist to do your servicing...can save you a packet on an older motor.

The 250 is a cracking good motor...seriously....do not get rid...could be a big mistake.

Seriously.......tyres, brakes and exhausts are consumables on any motor. If your motor is 5+ yrs old then go the indie route. You really don't need to be paying top wack (some may call it rip off wack!).

Look at "blackcircles" for a tyre quote.....google it you may be quite surprised what you can get.

Thanks Normski

Just an update on the price - the quoted £705 I had turns out to be for the back section (twin pipes up to the first join. The section I am after I have found out is the next section which is a complete front section (seems there's only two sections) which will set me back £1426 fitted !! All for the sake of one small hole in the middle box.

I am pasting it up tomorrow - if that doesn't work then its off to a welder - might buy a welding kit myself as it looks like its the cheaper option.

Over £2000 for a complete exhaust is laughable. My other option is looking for a company to make a custom one.

It is a 250 (cant update the profile info for some reason?!)

Update on the exhaust - cant be welded as its too thin - garage I took it to also very wary on doing this due to the electronics in the car. They advised the best method to weld was using a "mig" welder and with grounding the welder, or something, then it could mess with the cars electronics?

Next up I bought a tub of exhaust paste - last chance of repairing it. Got under the car and gave it a good go at sealing the hole. After cleaning it up before applying the past I found that its holed around the manufactures weld (about a 3cm thin crack / hole around the pipe that is located on the first box which is joined to the pipe from the exhaust tips. It seems to be a stress point on the exhaust - it flexes at that point which is evident now its rusted at that point so I thought the paste would not hold that well but gave it a go.

Sounded good this morning on the way to work. Dinnertime I went out in it and it started blowing again. Got home tonight and had a loot at where it had been pasted and noticed it had cracked again through the past - must be the point where its flexing I think.

Must admit it felt different this morning when driving, more responsive.

Have re-pasted over the hole again but don't hold out much hope of this lasting - dilema ...don't want to pay the £1400 lexus price, want to keep the car

Might try eBay for a second hand one from a breaker - webuyanycar.com values it at £6000 !

MOT is up April 2014.

Final update - exhaust ended today on the way home - paste didn't help! - lost power also. Car is only drivable at 30 mph and sounds like a tank now. The middle back box broke away from the pipe.

Was talking to a mechanic at lunchtime today, took car in for a second opinion on whether it could be welded. He actually had a 2007 250 in the compound that he was waiting for a front piece for from eBay.

It just so happened that he had seen the break happen on another 250 (a 2008 model) a few months back at exactly the same spot and was unable to weld as the metal was too thin. All he managed to do to get the guy home was to weld a support onto the pipes so the guy could get home ok.. The one he was working on had been sitting there for 8 days still waiting for the exhaust to arrive.

He also confirmed it was a Lexus only part

Seemed to think there was a lot of stress at the point where it had broken as seen on the other 250 and the one in the compound. May be an issue coming to light with these in that its getting to the point now where the exhausts are coming to the end of their life and the problem is now being highlighted?

He gave me a company to contact to quote me on a stainless one. Will give them a call tomorrow.

Will update on the cost if I manage to get one?!

You should be able to update your profile. Click on your name at top right on the page. Then click on My Profile, to the right you should see Edit my Profile, click on this and make your changes to the detail of Profile Information. Then scroll down to Save Changes.

I've just done this and removed "is220d" from my profile....it worked fine.

Maybe be expensive £1400 for an exhaust, but apart from that they are a very reliable solid all round car - chain driven, cheap servicing etc - it certainly isn't a nice bill but think of buying a new car and the depreciation - when you think of that £1400 is very little. Surprised at a Toyota exhaust dying that young all the same.

Needed to do something today as the cars just sitting in the drive crying.

Got on the web and found a company that will manufacture a FULL stainless steel exhaust system (cat back) for between 4-500 £'s fitted. Will need the car for a full day to custom fit it but down side is that they are that busy at the moment and cannot fit it in for another two weeks.

Worth the wait ... watch this space !
