Yeah my Toyota Sera has one. What is does is detect heat. For the air conditioning system

As we know if you measure heat in direct sun it always feels hotter than in the shade.

What the sensor does is measure UV rays and how much sun is actually there therefore knowing how cool to put the air con on.

Well thats what is does in my toyota that was made in 1991. Old techology is the best hey !!

Or..........maybe it's for switching the lights on automatically?

Along with rain sensitive wipers, one of the most pointless gadgets imo.

Some things are best left to the driver.

There are 2 sensors, one on each side of the dashboard just next to the windscreen. The LH one is the solar sensor proper which detects how much sunlight is falling on the car to assist the aircon ( as described above), and the RH one is a simple light sensor which tells the lighting system when to dim the display (as long as the panel light rheostat is not set to max). It also turns the lights on automatically if you have that system fitted. Paul
