Backplates (For Brake Discs) Quoted £365 + Vat Each -Is This A Joke Pl

Recommended Posts

Anyone know where I can get new disk backplates, at a reasonable price, As I think the ones from lexus must be gold plated, As I was quoted £365 + vat - and wait for it - yes -EACH, It is a 2005 RX 400h, Many Thanks.

If this is not a mistake at the parts dept, they must be having a laugh.

If not, it's another Lexus rip off.

Why have they failed? I have a 1990 merc 230e, the backplates are still good.

On my LS one side rusted through and I repaired it, told no longer available, but still

some in Japan and the USA.

Overpriced for inferior quality!

I'm not that clued up on car brakes but is it the part on here called 'Dust Cover' (pt no 47781/2)

http://www.lexussouthatlantaparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=776976&ukey_make=1082&ukey_model=15677&modelYear=2005&ukey_category=21744&ukey_trimLevel=19114

These seem to be priced up at $52.98 and I can't see there being such a big difference twixt US and GB prices.... so maybe I got the wrong part

I'd buy those two, then for an extra 20 quid each, powdercoating them Black, and that way you'll have saved yourself a few bob, and doubt you'll need to replace them again, £150 quid max, and an hour and half ball park fitted.

Why do they need changing? Had a problem or just something 'discovered' during a service?

If it's not causing a problem, leave it or go to an independent garage and it will be a more reasonable cost - it's not a specialist job.

Thanks for your replies guys, The back plates as I thought they were called, have rotted and are loose, in fact the o/side rear was hanging on by a thread, so I pulled off what was left of it, the n/ side rear is nearly as bad. Can't seem to find them online, but as you say, maybe they are called DUST COVERS so i'll try again to hunt them down, Cheers.

They are called dust covers and great if you can get them from the US.

A couple of places I tried would not ship outside the US.

Check shipping costs, they seem to have gone sky high from the USA.

Previous post regarding having to remove the hub was right, [not sure about your model].

I didn't fancy stripping the hub so I cut a slot in the fixing collar of the 'dust cover' and slid it off.

This part was still pretty solid, so I made a rough match to the back and welded it together, not very elegant

but it's still OK 2 years on.

Still advertised as available from Japan, but I'm scared of paying by card, hoping they

would get Paypal!

Listed at about $20 each!

Hi Guys, Thanks for all your help, I was told by europarts and other suppliers that you can't get aftermarket backplates/dust covers. They have to come from lexus, Perhaps their prices include a car bolted on to them HA HA! So just going to buy any ones of the same diameter, and the mechanic said he would adapt them to fit, Can get them for around £20 each. Cheers.

HI Angus,

I too have the same issue regarding these back plates and the same stunned shock at the cost for a bit of pressed steel, why oh why are they around seven times the price of the actual disc.

May i ask, the AMAYAMA supplier , did it work out ?

Were they genuine parts and did they actually arrive as stated. Any advice or comments would be appreciated as just over £900 inc VAT.... seems just bonkers. (supply only quote from LEXUS Glasgow)

Regards

G

Comment/advice about AMAYAMA from any other members welcome too......just seems too good to be true,

old school here and life tends to teach..."if it seems too good to be true....blah blah !!!
