Hi all,

I've noticed I have a coolant leak, as you may see by the spraying in the pics below, also the coolant in the reservoir is sitting just below the low level. Any ideas/advise regarding the location of said leak would be very much appreciated!

Lexus diesel spraying coolant over engine bay.... Anybody else thinking first sign of head gasket failure. The IS200d and IS220d are known for failed head gaskets, first sign being coolant spraying inside the engine bay from a pressurised radiator. Pressurised with exhaust gases. I hope not, but there's so many cases of the head gasket going on the diesel.

Lexus even admitted a design fault with the Head Gasket and will replace the engine free of charge if the car is under 111,000 miles and 7 years old.

Hi,

Very worrying as I thought the HG problems were on the engines up to 2009 models, the engines after early 2009 had modified engines which sorted the HG problems, I could be wrong?

Also wasn't the extended warranty on engines that were built up to feb 2009?

Thanks for all your replies.

I read about the HG issues on pre-2009 models, and thought it was resolved with the 2011 update.

No other blown HG indications are present, such as overheating, mayonaise around oil cap and no oil in coolant - so not so sure its that.

I'll check up that warranty goodwill thing though!

Hi I had this happen to me two weeks ago where the coolant was sprayed everywhere by the aux belt on the water pump. My coolant was also below the low marker.

I had a Lexus specialist look at the car and he said its a failed or about to fail water pump. Anyway I have ordered a new water pump and more coolant to be fixed next week.

I too do not see any mayonnaise around the oil cap or water tank, nor does my car over heat -

Fingers crossed its just the water pump!!

My car is 2006 petrol 250 with 70K on the clock

Thanks for your input, its reassuring to hear yours is probably the water pump - and not the HG!

Garage appointed by seller are saying radiators leaking, plus there is some oil on underside of engine, adding that it may just be from oil change - bit concerned though as I wouldn't have Lexus techs down as messy, and leaky rads don't seem very common, unlike waterpumps.

Take it to Lexus if you're still in that mileage/time frame. I guarantee first thing they'll do is sniff test for HG leak.

Yeah the problems were meant to be resolved after 2009. I have a friend tho, who is a tech at a Toyota dealership. He used to be very active on this forum. He still throws these engines away, even after 2009.

The drop in the mpg is not a good sign either. I always tend to fear the worst and then if it's not the worst it doesn't seem so bad. That's where I'm coming from, not trying to be a scaremonger or anything. Just this engines reputation really does proceed itself :(

KC14... It all depends how badly the HG has "gone". If the head is warped then it's a new head at least.

Read through some threads on this forums. Bills have been stupid, like £5k!

I would get a HG test done just to be on the safe side, you probably can buy the kit and check yourself.

Keep an eye on your coolant level, make sure it don't drop below the low marker line, it should be just above it when engine cold.

No, according to Lexus Edgware Rd, mines outside the warranty at 108,000 - funny how they asked my mileage, then said 107,000 is the limit.

Why would they ask for millage and when you say 108K they turn around and say sorry mate its 107K - Should just say 100K to make it look real.

Yes, all very odd. Would have thought they wouldn't mind a bit of warranty work, given the hard sell on servicing I got a couple of weeks ago.

Like you say, Lexus uk are my next port of call if only just to confirm.

On a side note, my seller (massive company) have authorised rad replacement. Not sure if I should just reject the car and get my money back

My understanding is the warranty is up to 7 years old, and 180,000km (111,846 miles) and is provided by TME (Toyota Europe) (hence the km distance limit). This is certainly the case for the Toyota models, Avensis,RAV 4, Auris and Verso so I would expect it to be the same for the Lexus IS220d too.

Either speak to Toyota/Lexus GB or Europe, don't accept what the dealer has told you.

Yes, I don't understand it. All I've found on the subject is the figure you mention. Can't imagine how Lexus Edgware Rd could get something like this wrong, I mean its not like its an insignificant number of engines that all have had the same fault. I must say he was gone some time as well after I asked the question, so he had plently of time to do his sums!

Will speak to Lexus/Toyata Uk/Europe, and let you know how I get on.
