I am looking at getting myself either an IS 200D or an IS250 (2011 or later)

Still not sure which, but I am erring on the side of an IS250 Auto.

A colleague here has recently got himself a BMW and knows I am considering one of these and said he was put off a Lexus because of gearbox issues.

I did ask if this was the manual or the auto boxes. He said both !

I have read about problems on IS's upto 2008 with a heavy flywheel and the odd autobox with insufficient oil and maybe a bad solenoid or few. but nothing else.

So in light of this, I have 2 questions

  1. Are there known gearbox issues on the IS200D or the Is250 Auto ?
  2. Any thing I should be looking out for / checking when I start to look at the cars

cheers

No brainer.....go for the 250 Auto. The auto box is divine...go and try some.

Your friend with the BM knows nothing of 250 auto box....that's for sure. Probably never even driven one!

The diesel manual box can be a tad......agricultural.... shall we say. You should try a few to experience it for yourself.

I used to have a GS300 Sport and that is still by far my most missed car - hence why I feel I want another Lexus - though a GS is a bit too big for my needs now.

At the moment I am in a Saab oil burner so agricultural is not too much of a problem though I am reading of the dreaded EGR issues (that I currently have)

The 250 is preferred as it is a slush box and the EGR issue.

so anything that I should specifically look out for or things to be aware of ?

Cheers

Maybe its just me, but my problem is the way it slips into 1st when I want reverse and vica versa. Like with my Mercedes vito though, the way I see it is the more agricultural the part is, the less likely it is to break! To honest, last auto I drove was a mk2 cavalier in which the gearbox went, so still slightly wary of auto.

Hi, i got an is 250 auto whit 9 years old, and my geabox is kaput, Im changing to another car, a smaller one.

The problem whit the gerabox is that Lexus dont have service for it, you must change oil and filter ever 80.000kms, because they dont did to my car today whit 160.000kms gearbox is kaput, works only on safe mod, have only 1st 2sec and 3rd.

3.500 euros plus taxs to fix on Lexus.

2.000 euros to fix on a repair gearbox company.

I love the car but is to expensive to repair this issue, so im going change to a smaller and more fuel efficient car.

The problmens whit all cars star on 160.000kms.

If you do service to your gearbox, i think you will never get problemns.
