vvt-i is not really there for performance. It increases low end torque but is mainly for economy and emmisions. That and the 5-speed auto box are the main reasons why the series II is more economical than the series I.

vvt-i does not kick in, you don't feel it.

Nearly all Toyota engines give a kick around 4,000 rpm. Below that speed the engine is designed for low end torque, economy and quietness. However to get the most performance out of the engine and the 4 valves per cylinder design a couple of things happen. Firstly the path the air takes into the engine is shortened. This decreases low end torque but allows better engine breathing and is achieved by the ACIS valve. Also the ignition timing is advanced to give an increase in engine performance.
