  1. How about buying him his own Lexus to play with? On the subject of car seats, any tips for stopping them permanently marking the leather? We're expecting our first little demon in April (OH MY *** only 6 weeks and I haven't finished decorating the nursery) We've ordered a Britax RockaTot deluxe cos it did sehr gut in the German side and front impact tests and did best in the Which! report. Not a problem in Mummies Madza with cloth seats, but in Daddies (flipping heck...6 weeks) car with nice leather I'm going to have to be careful.
  2. I always carry an extra couple of litres around in my fuel tank. That way, I don't have to stand out like a chump in the cold and wet looking to oncoming motorists like I'm taking a whizz in my fuel tank
  3. I thought mine was a bit weedy, until I heard it from outside the car. There is so much sound deadening in the car that I probably couldn't hear if the engine had blown up, or if the exhaust had fallen off. A light on the dashboard would probably come on in those cases though. My wife used to have a Nissan Micra and the horn on that seemed quite loud too. Maybe you should get your hearing checked! The loudest horn I have heard is the one that my wife now has on her Mazda 323. The last time she used it, 3 ships travelling up the Bristol channel changed course because they thought they were about to run aground! If you want to swap horns, engine bays, engines or cars with my wife, I'm sure she'd be happy to oblige you!
  4. Set my alarm off when I got my GS300MK2 so I'd know what to listen out for if someone tried to break in. It sounded like a normal alarm siren, but I could also hear tooting of the horn (not sure if it was the horn behind the radiator grille, or a different one).
  5. Check out Disc T@2 if you're worried about CDR labels peeling off or bubbling and jamming your changer.
  6. It's probably not going to be cheap or easy. Check out Lexus Dash they might be able to help even though they are in the US
  7. My Civic has a boot spoiler with an LED brake light. I noticed after fitting it, that the left brake light and spoiler brake light come on first, followed by the right hand one a couple of hundreths of a second later. Only noticed it one day after I painted my garage door white and was reversing down the drive The LED's in the spoiler light are really really bright. Often see people at behind putting on their sunglasses at night
  8. Is the sub just a straight swap out? I've heard all kinds of issues with the factory kit running at low ohmages (2 I believe). Also whats the size in the GS300SE MK2, is it a weird size like 9.437"?
  9. Just checked my cookbook. Lexus GS300 98- without satnav 35minutes gas mark 6 Lexus GS300 98- with satnav 35 minutes gas mark 5 or until golden blue Have you actually seen the car since? Are they working it properly? Picking up my replacement GS300 tomorrow after the first one let me down. Hope it's not a baking hot day or it seems I'd be in for some more troubles! Hope they sort it for you pronto and that the respray is upto scratch. I had the bonnet of my old Civic resprayed. Took it to the jetwash and woomph, a great chunk of lacquer came off. Shop blamed it on a dud batch of lacquer.
  10. Check this out. Have not really had time to read it, but it might be just what you're looking for.... Something from clublexus
  11. Slightly off topic, but still on the subject of batteries. Some time ago, I read that if your car has electronic ignition (at the time I read it, not many did!), you should disconnect the - lead from the battery if you are going to trickle charge it or else it might damage something. Is this still the case with modern cars? Unfortunately, my battery is no more as I'm currently (no pun intended ) in between Lexus', because the one I bought turned out to be a "dud" , but I'm asking because the battery on my wifes Mazda seems to have suffered as a result of the cold weather. It still works but the engine is slow to turn over in the mornings. As she only does short journeys, I thought I'd put it on charge overnight and top up the water to see if it would keep it going for a bit longer. If it doesn't work, I don't know whether to get a Mazda one (£65+VAT) or a 3rd party one. £65+VAT seemed a bit steep as I only paid £32inc VAT for my old Honda one when it went last year. Do the garages charge more during the winter because they know people will buy them? Did you hear about the two madmen that got arrested for causing a disturbance, one thought he was a firework, the other thought he was a battery. Apparently the police charged one of them , but let the other off.
  12. If you do decide to get one, make sure you park the car under the apex of a pyramid and wear a copper bracelet on your wrist and some crystals round your neck while fitting it. As a general rule, if something says it works by using magnets, and isn't some sort of motor, then it's a load of mumbo jumbo. Spend the money you were going to spend on the magical magnet more wisely, perhaps on something that really does work, like anti-ageing creams or having your fortune told or some petrol
  13. Whoops, should have posted this in the wheels section...sorry
  14. Hi there. Just noticed that on my GS300SE MK2, one of the wheels looks slightly different and I wondered which type was "normal". Three of them look like this... and the other one like this... What's the difference I hear you say? Well, the middle bit on the odd one out looks more shiny than the other ones. Do you think at some point, the others have been replaced, or has only one been replaced? I'm not too worried because the car is being exhanged under the 30-day warranty due to some serious misfiring problems that I've had with it. The one it's hopefully being swapped with has 4 wheels that all look like the first wheel (with the less shiny centre) and I just wondered if anyone knew which, if any, were best. I've read a lot of messages on these boards about alloy's that have been replaced due to brake dust and other problems. Sorry if this has you all rushing out with a torch to check your that wheels match! On the subject of wheels...what does everyone else use to clean their wheels? On my old Honda, I used to use "Wonder Wheels" which I found to be great for removing even the most caked on dirt (still doen't remove dried out Weetabix from cereal bowls though!). I was wondering if this might be a bit violent for Lexus' seemingly more delicate wheels. I thought about maybe watering it down, say 30% WW, 65% water 5%harder brushing!
  15. Yeee Ha Sure did work for them Duke boys. Shame they usually ended up wrecking the paintwork by the end of the programme anyway. Me thinks it would be easier to touch up the scratches than paint a Confederate flag on the roof
  16. I would be inclined (no pun intended) to take the passenger seat out of your mates car and swap it with yours. Otherwise, you could just try and get someone really fat and heavy to sit in your passenger seat wearing nylon underpants that are too small for them and wait for them to wriggle the seat back into position. :D Seriously though, can't you even jam a very small cross head screwdriver into the remains of the prong which has snapped off and move it back to a normal position?
  17. You shouldn't really leave the car for long periods with the key in the engine run position when the engine is not running. You run the risk of overheating and damaging the coil packs (the things the sparkplugs are connected to) and other components which get energy supplied to them with the key in this position. It's inconsiderate people like you with your flat batteries that keep all the Ford and Vauxhall motorists waiting for an RAC man to turn up when they break down.....keep up the good work ;)
  18. This is the third and possibly last week of owning my MK2 GS300SE :( . Picked up the car from Lexus Wolverhampton on the 7th and drove it home to Bristol without a hitch. The car seemed superb and I was extremely happy. Following day though, I started the engine and noticed it seemed to be running a little unevenly. Drove about 3 miles towards the M32 and the car started shuddering violently when the transmission shifted into 5th. Moved the shift lever to 4 and the vibration got better. However, when I pulled up at some lights, the idle was all over the place and was very lumpy as if the car was missing on 1 or more cylinders. Drove straight home and called the RAC to get the car trucked into Lexus Bristol. I've read that you should not drive with a misfire because it can damage the cats. Lexus Bristol kept the car until Friday and were sure that the problem was caused by condensation forming in the electrical connectors from when the engine was steam cleaned by Lexus Wolverhampton while they were preparing it. They assured me that they had dried out the connectors. given the car thorough road tests and a cold start and everything was fine. Got the car back on Friday evening. Used the car once on the Saturday and things still seemed to be going OK. Sunday, started the car in the morning-lumpy idle. Just in case Lexus Bristol did not believe me, I made a video recording of the symptoms and recorded off the audio and left it in the stereo so the techy could hear the misfiring problem and might have some idea on how to fix it. Drove down to Lexus Bristol and the car was juddering and missing on and off virtually all the way there, but seemed to run fine when I arrived. Left the car with them until last Thursday. They said that they had replaced the spark plugs and again, had thoroughly tested it. One of their techies even took the car home with him to give it a proper test first thing in the morning. I was assured that everything was now OK and that the gremlins had been removed. Things were OK until earlier this afternoon. I'd been out to B&Q to get some stuff and decided to call into a petrol station to get a paper on the way home. The forcourt was pretty busy and while I was waiting for some idiot in a Renault to clear the parking bay, the engine started idling really erratically, almost stalling a few times. I went in and bought the paper, came out and had a really unpleasant and misfiring ride all the way back home again. What should I do? I really like the car but I need a car I can rely on. This is the most expensive car I've ever bought, and it seems to be the least reliable. My wife is expecting our first kiddie in April, and I want a car that can get us to the hospital on time! It's also a major hassel to be without my new car again (luckily I still have my unsold reliable old Honda), but it's not the same and it's costing me £63 a month to insure. My wife has to keep picking me up and dropping me off at the Lexus dealer (she likes their cookies and coffee though). The dealers have been really helpful, but I just don't have much confidence in them or the car anymore. Lexus Wolverhampton kindly agreed to extend the 30 day trial period so that it now runs from last Thursday, and after that 30 days, have agreed to extend the warranty to 2 years in order to boost my confidence in the car. Do I give them another chance? Do I say enough's enough? Has anyone else suffered from misfiring? It seems to happen when the air is really damp like it was last night and today, or it might be something to do with weekends! What does everyone think I should do? How does the Lexus 30 day exchange policy work? I can't seem to find any information about it. PS. For the last 9 years, my wifes grandparents have got me Lynx in some form or another (shampoo, deoderant, shower gel, toothpaste, eyebrow polish), this year.......socks!
  19. I heard somewhere (or possibly dreamed) a long time ago, that the Gitso cameras mark the offending vehicle with a dot on the photograph. You should be fine unless you happen to have a dot painted on the back of your car for some reason! Rant mode ON We're all pretty stupid really. All it would take is for everyone to behave for say 6 months and their source of income would dry up. No income-no maintenance on the cameras-no people to get the film out of them-no money to buy new ones. I always try not to speed, but depite my best intentions, you sometimes have to go 35 if you need to get past a cyclist safely before the car coming towards you ends up as a dashboard ornament. I've only been caught speeding twice. Once was about 7 years ago in my trusty or was that rusty old Metro. I was doing 38 in a 30 because I had some idiot in a Renault 5 turbo trying to check the tread depth on my spare tyre-no excuse really. The other time was in Lanzarote. The local cops supposedly got me doing 42KMH in a 30 zone. They did not show me any evidence and because I don't speak Spanish I couldn't argue with them. They flagged down a conveniently passing taxi to take me to a cash point so I could pay the £120 fine! This happened to be the same taxi that was in front of me doing the same speed when I got caught! The taxi's were just going up and down the same road as the trap was on so they'd get the business! What was even more bizarre was that the 30 signs were facing in the other direction, according to the signs on the side we were going, the limit was 40! Spanish signs-worse than their plumbing! Speed limits should really be timed. Around my area, there are some really nice dual carriageways, which until recently were NSL. Now there are so many 50 and 40MPH signs on them, they show up from space! If the limit applied from say 7AM to 7PM, it would still have the "accident saving" properties, yet would not hold up people being forced to do 40MPH on a road with no or few other cars on it. Rant mode OFF!
  20. Insurance companies suck big time. They must use some kind of lottery style random number generator to come up with their premiums. When phoning/internetting around for my 98 GS300SE, the difference in some of the quotes was about £1800. Absolutely bloody ridiculous. I went with Direct Line in the end-they can shove that damn red phone up their exhaust pipe though. 29 years old with 25 year old missus full NCB no points £445 full comp. I think it would be a good idea if everyone in the UK started phoning insurance companies and told them what they were willing to pay. Then let the insurance companies come after you looking for business. They would soon lower their prices then! Nothing wrong with a bit of haggling!
  21. Is this what you're looking for? http://www.lexus.co.uk/archives/gs300mark1_spec.html http://www.lexus.co.uk/archives/gs300mark1...sport_spec.html http://www.lexus.co.uk/archives/gs300mark1...egato_spec.html
  22. Picked up my GS300 yesterday and at the moment, you couldn't punch the smile off my face! When driving it home though, I noticed a few times, a sound like a motor running from the vicinity of the drivers footwell. Once home, I did some experimentation, and found the noise ocurrs if you press the brake pedal (fairly hard) a few times and lasts about 5-10 seconds. I'm assuming from this that is could be the ABS pump repressurising. After leaving the car standing for a few hours, I went out and just turned on the ignition (without starting the engine) and the noise was there for about 30 seconds or so. Is this normal operation or is the ABS system low on pressure? The ABS light on the dash has not come on which I guess is a good sign! Thanks PS The smile on my wife's face disappeared as soon as my Switch card was swiped through the machine! Looks like I'm going to have to do some serious buying of flowers or choccies
  23. If you can speak Japanese you could try asking this chap. I don't know who he is and I've never tried contacting him, but judging by the number of fixits on his website for virtually all the Japanese cars, he looks like he knows a lot. http://www.fureai.or.jp/~noranbo/ You could see if Babelfish on Altavista would give a close enough translation Otherwise, you could see if any vehicle training colleges in your area train Toyota/Lexus mechanics. I used to work for a vehicle training college that had contracts for Porsche and Audi. VW supplied us with a copy of their workshop manual/diagnostic software called Poses, perhaps Toyota do the same. We also had all the breakout boxes and interfaces to reprogram/diagnose all VAG cars. The one I worked at was always on the lookout for donor cars, just ensure that the grease monkeys don't spoil the leather!
  24. Just took the plunge and have put down a deposit on a used GS300SE which I'm collecting next week . Can anyone let me know if the CD changer will happily play CDR's. On long journeys, I like to compile my CD's onto 80min CDR's, you can usually get 1½-2 per 80min CD which saves on changing. I've read some posts in the IS200 forum regarding errors supposedly caused by the playing of CDR's, and one mentioned that Lexus do not recommend it. Also, does anyone know where I can get a device which kills or seriously disables people who whack into the side of your car in car parks when they open their doors. The paintwork is pristine and I'd like to keep it that way
  25. http://www.lexusclub.ch/News_2004gs.htm might be it. Text translates to 2004 Lexus gs? Also this picture was found in the InterNet. It shows an alleged Toyota Aristo, which is classified as "secretly". Possibly this model comes with us i.e. in Europe as Lexus gs on the market. Unfortunately still no specifications are well-known, but with large probability under the hood 3,3 Liter-V6-Motor or also the 4,3 Liter-V8-Motor will work. The Design reminds of the "new ES300", whereby the grill leans strongly against the today's gs. Naja, we will hunt it!
