  1. These commonly smoke on a cold start with the original exhaust, but it's a white smoke or steam from the condensation build up which clears after a while. However, yours seemed to do that, but also puff out a little blue/ black smoke which would indicate oil. Has it got an aftermarket sports exhaust on it, as it sounds a little fruity? I'd never personally purchase a modified car, as to me it means it's been driven hard generally. That isn't always the case though of course, especially if you know the person you're having it off.
  2. If the radiator has been replaced, with any luck there was just an air lock which has now passed. This 'hole' gets filled with water, thus leaving your expansion tank empty. Hopefully you'll be ok now. The most common water loss faults on these seem to be either the radiator on higher mileage vehicles or water pump. The engine is solid as a rock, I shouldn't worry about that unless it has been miss treated.
  3. As you can see from this drawing, the lighting for the combination meter shares the same circuit as much of the dashboard back lighting. So, you must have a loose plug or something of that description if everything else is working, and the rheostat still varies everything else. All of the rheostat controlled feeds you will see are terminated at connector J9. Which I think is behind the passenger airbag if it is a mirror image of a left hand drive car. Otherwise, it will be behind the dash clocks.
  4. Hiya. It looks like you may have blown an output on the Body ECU. The lighting system is permanent live off the dome fuse, the ECU earths whatever light is needed to be on. So you could test the light by earthing the correct side and see if it lights. This will prove you have the correct supply.
  5. Hi all. I have a GS300 Manual from my old 1996 model that I found up my loft. It's sitting here doing nothing, so you're welcome to come pick it up! I live near Lichfield, in South Staffordshire. Not more than 10 minutes from Junction 11 M6.
  6. All the snow mode does is vastly relax the throttle response. It doesn't actually improve mpg as such, it just helps you drive more economically. The same results can be achieved without snow mode, but you have to be disciplined. That's where most of us fail hehe!
  7. One up they should be 33 as standard anyway which is what I run mine on. Although, it isn't lowered. On mine, 35 is if you're loaded or averaging over 160kph.
  8. Hi Matthew. I do mainly A road drives with my general use of the car. My lifetime average is 29mpg (it's an auto). I've had a few weeks where I've averaged 31 but that's with sticking to 60mph and no more. If I drive at 80mph regularly my tank average drops to 27mpg.
  9. Yep, the fan switch is on the bottom drivers side of the radiator. However, have you tried turning the Aircon on? With the aircon in action they should run all the time. If they don't, then chances are it's not your temperature switch on the radiator. They are two speed by the way too. With aircon in action they will run in slow speed all the time, with bursts of high speed when required. If they don't work at all then I'd guess fuse or supply problem of some sort.
  10. 75W/90 is fine so long as it meets API GL-3. The fill plug is on the side and it should take about 1.8 litres to fill. The level should be between 0 and 5mm from the plug level. So yes, normally you fill until it just starts to come out of the plug hole.
  11. The expansion tank? That would be unusual, they're not under pressure either. Oh well, glad you've found the cause.
  12. I thought the leads were taped into the loom? I can't imagine people would bother removing them when installing an amp bypass kit normally. And even on systems without an amp, most people would just use an ISO adapter kit.
  13. Yep, the handbrake isn't linked. I can put my hand brake on and off in any gear position, including drive.
  14. Having had a Prius, I do know they use the Lexus system. Not sure if it's compatible though.
  15. Glad you've sorted an engine. If looked after reasonably well they should be smooth as silk for miles. Mine doesn't sound like it's done 138k miles, and i'm sure it's missed the odd service before I bought it.
  16. This is the one I fitted to mine and the place I got it from http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-IS200-MANUAL-2-0-1999-TO-2005-RADIATOR-BRAND-NEW-2-YEAR-WARRANTY-/290923538355?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ALexus&hash=item43bc64e7b3 Helps to have the car parked with the front higher than the rear when filling it too.
  17. Given that an equivalent 3 series beemer was similar money but had absolutely no equipment, it seems better value.
  18. If you're handy with the spanners, then changing the rad will be fine. They're pretty easy to change. Plus if it's a manual you've got two less hoses than someone with an auto! First remove the air inlet that sits above the radiator. Drain your coolant from the drain plug on the lower drivers side of the rad. Then disconnect your hoses, and unplug the temperature sensor. Finally, undo the clamps that hold the radiator on at the top and it just lifts and slides out. Unscrew and transfer the fan assembly to your new radiator, and fitting is reversal of removal.
  19. Hate to say this, but if you've put fresh good quality oil in and it's still knocking that doesn't bode well. If the oil pump isn't working correctly the damage may already have been done. Can you identify where the knock is coming from? ie, top or bottom end. Sounds to me like someone has put thick oil in to hide a problem. (Not uncommon)
  20. Yeah, that poxy plastic is so easy to mark. That colour looks nice, but isn't practical.
  21. If you fancy something quicker instead of waiting around for a splitter, why don't you just join the cables you need to join? Transfer the cables and pins from the original plug into your new one where there are spare holes. Then where there are pins already used, just join them. The AVC-LAN is a parallel system so it's all just joined together.
  22. I think you'll find most people will say "just buy an IS300". The 2JZ is so much more capable in terms of modification.
  23. I've got a cheap one that is sold on ebay from a company in Lichfield. Can't remember the name now. It's around the £50 mark anyway. I'm really pleased with it. It comes with a polished tip and sounds nice and deep too. Mine has got 140k on the clock and quite tatty, so couldn't be bothered to buy anything expensive. Only thing was, I had to give the hangers a little bend on it to get it to sit perfectly, but that's often the case with aftermarket exhausts.
  24. Yes, the comma stuff seems fine to me. They do a few different auto transmission oils, all with a 3 letter description. The one for Toyota is ASW. http://www.uk.commaoil.com/productsguide/view/6/193 But as mentioned above, it's just like changing the engine oil really. However, if you want to do a thorough job of it you need to do a number of fill and drains, also the sump needs to come off so the filter can be cleaned.
