head gasket engine Lexus is220d head gasket symptoms?
Shahpor replied to elvis20002's topic in Engine & Transmission
Hello Elvis. Sorry to hear you are having problems. It does certainly sound like it is burning the coolant, but that usually includes getting smoke out of the back. Does yours smoke? The best way to check would be to get a sniff test done. Something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-block-tester-kit-for-petrol-and-diesel-engines-original-leak-tester-/181059430832 Fingers crossed the problem is elsewhere. -
Hello, I am actually not sure what the figures are supposed to be, but the manual states the following: Apparently, testing the MAF is a bit more tricky. You need to follow this procedure: Less than 0.36 g/sec. (+/- 15%) If the result is not as specified, replace the MAF meter. Start the engine and warm it up with all accessory switches OFF (until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or more). Drive the vehicle at 50 km/h (31 mph) or more for 3 to 5 minutes (*1). Allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes (*2). Perform steps (*1) and (*2) at least 3 times. Turn the engine switch on (ACC). Turn the engine switch on (IG) (do not run the engine). Turn the tester ON. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the intelligent tester. Standard condition: Not sure if this is of any help, but I am not sure what else to suggest I am afraid.

Could you email them? It is better to do it in writing so you have some proof. Although, if you email them, make sure you get them to reply to confirm receipt. How often does the fault occur? Next time it happens, get a video to show them. Did you put more than £100 on the credit card then? It would make things easier. Also, according to what I have read, they can charge you a fair use fee for the time you have used it.

Perhaps I missed it, but no website? All I have seen is a Facebook page?

I really wish I had a local Aldi around here when things like this turn up. It is surprising the kind of stuff they do, and for £5 I would have bought one anyway, regardless of need.

Nice one. So is this a part they fit to US IS's, but not UK ones?

As if anyone would do that! I think what John means, and I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong, is that the accepted convention used to be to use the full phrase/word with the abbreviation the first time you use it, and then continue on with just the abbreviation from then on. That is how we used to do it in school back in the good old days anyway.

Hi, You need a code reader to see what fault code the ECU has stored to see what the problem is. There are plenty on Amazon/Ebay, and as long as it is OBD2 compatible, it should work. They don't cost a lot and could come in handy if anything happens again. -
I did, but I do think that there is a difference between not changing a filter because of laziness/neglect, and deliberately making a working part look like it had failed. Also, why would the technician do it? A back street garage might do it to make money, but the main dealer technician wouldn't personally benefit from it.

If the last service was done by Lexus, you could give the dealer a ring a see if they could tell you what was done? If not, what I suggest is get it into the dealer for the recall, and ask then to have a look at the plugs while the manifold is off. They should be able to tell the difference between old and newish ones. Then ask them to change them if they haven't been done so already. If they keep the plugs in stock, this shouldn't be a problem. As for the service, it is up to you. Does you car have a full Lexus history? If it does, do you want to maintain it? Do you have a good independent that you trust to do the work? The cost of replacement pads actually isn't that unreasonable considering it is the main dealer, but it would still be cheaper to get them changed elsewhere. In fact, with basic tools, it is quite straightforward to change them yourself.

I think it might be a little bit of a stretch to say they douse them with oil. It is a shame you didn't get the video though, it would have been interesting to see. They do look fine, although are they different brands? One looks like it has been changed much more recently then the other.

Great news Good to hear a positive post about the warranty consider the problems some people on here have been experiencing recently. So did they get confirmation from the warranty company before even telling you the water pump was knackered? Good service from the dealer either way. Although I am surprised by the cost of the diagnostics. Lexus Reading told me it would cost £86, which is for half an hour, because it rarely takes longer than that to diagnose a fault.

Hello, You are by no means alone with the skipping that occurs when cold. See here: As mentioned, it happens on mine too, and apart from being annoying, does no harm and doesn't indicate a fault. Dealer servicing details are on this page: https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/#ServicingYourLexus As you can see, a full service would cost you £445. Although, since your car is over 5 years old, you can use the Essential Service instead. That works out to £329. Assuming you are referring to front brake pads, then it is £145. Although if it is only squealing you are getting, they might not need changing, just some copper grease applied to the shim behind the pad. As for the recall, did you have the spark plugs changed at the last service? If not, then definitely get them done at the same time as the recall since they would only charge you for the plugs themselves.

No clue mate, just thinking of dampers in general. It is in the wheel well, where the spring sits.
-
On mine, when I got the car it had the original 2008 sat nav disc that wouldn't allow inputs into the nav while moving. Upgrading to a 2016 disc changed this and I can now access all the functions on the move. Not that I input destinations on the move! It is tricky enough standing still On that note, does anyone know if the GS and IS use the same system or not?

Good job investigating. Strange that Lexus would mention the dampers leaking since it shouldn't be difficult to see a leak. Did you have a look above the spring base to see if there is any fluid leaking from the top? Otherwise, barring the exhaust, it is looking pretty good under there. You are not the first to mention really tight wheel nuts either. I wonder if the newer impact drivers are now torqueing up the bolts too tight? I was always under the impression that they used a torque wrench to tighten them up to the correct amount. Hopefully you will hear back from both dealers with some positive results soon.
