  1. do you "agree" or "disagree" with Mr Darling? ← Mr Darling is an idiot..... 1) will the public consent to having mandatory GPS boxes in their cars?? NO! I wouldn't trust them with a TV remote control. 2) This has nothing to do with the environment - it is the politics of envy. Labour governments don't like to see people be successful and choosing nice cars. Only they will be allowed Jaguars etc. Do you think they will have to pay the charge?? 3) Do you think it is right in a "free" country that a government can decide what car you drive and where you can drive it? 4) I, like many others on this site drive many miles for work so will my company happily accept a fee of 100 quid to get round the M25 in the morning to make a vital appointment? Doubt it. 5) If they can track your position they can track your speed...nuff said.
  2. I run an LS430 and most of my travelling is motorway. On a long run the LS gets between 26 and 28 mpg and this drops to about 17-18 around town. Very comfortable quiet car compared to IS. I had IS200 auto whilst the LS was being serviced and got about 28 mpg on a long run so running costs are about similar on the motorway. The big difference (other than the size) is the LS is very quiet, soft riding luxury and the IS is much more hard riding and noisy, although by no means bad. My suggestion is to take the LS for a long motorway drive and be blown away.
  3. How about swapsies! mine's only 11 years old, just run in. Personally I think the newest LS can look pretty slab-sided and square and the interior isn't as stylish as it used to be. I think it actually looks a bit more plasticky when I sat in the new one a couple of weeks ago. That was grey with grey seats though so that probably made it worse, and 57K for a new one! You'd lose 20 grand in the first year or two.The LS is also more expensive now than the competition it was designed against (S-class,7 series,XJ jag) You can see why they don't sell well at first glance. Lexus should sort out the price when they bring out the new LS. I also sat in the new GS by the way, very nice but a bit small compared to what i'm used to.I preferred it to the old GS by a mile though. ← Depreciation is not so much steep as f :tsktsk:g vertical!!. I bought a 19 month old LS 430 and it had shed 23K!! I do get about 27mpg on motorway though which was indeed about the same as I got from an IS200 auto recently.
  4. Royal County Hotel in Durham City....historic city and all within walking distance of the hotel :D
  5. The saddest thing is that 10 years ago we wouldn't have been having this discussion and Scarface would not feel threatened enough to have to justisfy police actions. However because of the war waged on motorists over the last 10 years at the expense of catching "real" criminals the publics' regard for the police is at an all time low. Therefore we naturally assume that double standards are at play now. They may have been at play 10 years ago but we wouldn't have minded as much because we assumed the police were doing their best to catch the bad guys rather than targetting easy things such as speeding........I saw 9 police (motorbikes, vans and cars) manning a mobile trap in Bisley but have NEVER seen 9 police gathered for any other reason...
  6. I find that washing the windscreen and lights causes them to back off for some reason. The thought of killing themselves by ramming the back of my car doesn't seem to worry them at all but fine drops of soapy water seem to worry them sick??!! :)
  7. Sorry to disagree but you've stopped smoking not stopped enjoying life. Don't change your routine as all it does is remind you that you have stopped and make you miserable. If you want to go to the pub, just go and don't smoke when you are there. The only difficult bit you have done already and that's decide to stop and stub your last fag out. You've won already :)
  8. As a Newcastle fan I feel I should remain out of this conversation! :D The only way we'd finish 4th is by knocking off the 1 from the front of 14th!! Anyway well done Liverpool - great game.
  9. Congratulations - it's the best choice you can make in life believe me. I stopped 4+ years ago and don't regret it one bit. Free advice - don't wait to become a non smoker - you already are one. When you stop it's easy to fall into the trap and say if I can just stay off them for a year etc.... You are non-smoker now so just get on and enjoy life without the expense, risks and smell!!
  10. # 1)...yip can get that with the portable systems. 2)...Some have the ability to predict direction, sure the TOMTOM G0 300 does this, no idea how though..built in Gyro / compass ? 3) I priced othe SATNAV at £2.5k...was told worth £1k extra at 3 year resale point...ooch !..so bad resale your point.. worth £500 a year 4) ...cant argue with that...personally I'd only use it occasionally at best. 5)... yip one less but as it does speed cameras it replaces the radar detector ! ← Ooops - should have said ease of resale rather than resale value. Two comparative cars one with SatNav and one without. You may or may not get more for the one with but it should be easier to sell. The other advantage of the integrated system is you tend to get a bigger screen and that other car systems are routed through it such as climate, audio etc. As to whether it is worth 2.5K??? Maybe in the same way that an IS is worth more than an Avensis because it has a lexus badge on the front or is that opening a can of worms?? I guess the manufacturer charges for the integration work plus whatever the market will cope with on top?
  11. Portable systems have come on in leaps and bounds but I think there maybe a few advantages to the built in systems: 1) Traffic Avoidance information to help rerouting 2) If the GPS signal is lost an integrated system will compensate by monitoring the direction of travel from the wheels such as when going through tunnels, car parks etc. 3) Re-sale value. There was a time when sat nav etc added no value to your car but this is changing. Now certain models have to have certain options to be more saleable and I think this happening with Satnav. Don't believe me?? 10 years ago it was not common to own an executive car with leather - can you imagine today without it?? 4) I work on the principal that all cars should have it so only buy cars with it - couldn't find my own way now! 5) it's one less gadget dangling from my windscreen that needs a cable :D
  12. "you might be smiling now but you will regret wearing that white t-shirt tonight mate!"
  13. I've just passed the 10,000 miles mark on my LS since I got it (34K now on clock) and I now average about 25-28 mpg on a long motorway journey. Short journeys and urban about 18.
  14. just had an IS200 sport as loan car whilst mine was serviced. Only had 400 miles on the clock when I picked it up. Did 385 miles in it, mostly motorway, and the warning light still hadn't come on.
