Cvt Hate...

Recommended Posts

Was in germany a couple of weeks back, and really pleased to get an Audi A5 cabriolet.

It had a CVT transmission. I have to say it was absolutely horrendous to the point of been dangerous. The transmission in the IS is unbelievably better. I think I understand now why people have such negativity towards the CVT's.

From a dead start, foot flat to the floor there was, what felt like a 3 second delay before the car moved (As I found out when i pulled out on a truck). My colleague is a massive fan of audi, and even he couldn't believe it.

Normal driving, it felt like driving a manual car, but a manual car where a 5 year old is in charge of the clutch. Just setting off in normal traffic I had to be careful to avoid wheel spin.

Anyway rant over....

anyone else experienced CVT in other cars?

The Audi CVT is more of a traditional CVT rather than the planetary gear system that Toyota uses. I thought they were meant to be quite nice to drive but they are very unreliable, even for Audi's poor standards, so they have stopped production.

The CVT in my old Jazz was very smooth, but also very noisy if hard throttled. But to be fair it was only a city car with a small engine.

As far as reposivness, in Sport it was absolutley fine in pulling out of junctions, supprisingly.

David.
