Can someone confirm that on a mk2 to change the oil filter I will need to take off the undertray? - bally inconvenient place to put the filter.

Great believer in changing the filter more often than the oil, which rarely looks dirty.

Feeling lazy and with wet weather can't be asked to lay down on wet ground to check.  Will do the change myself if its not an Undertray off job.

on my mk4 ,under the filter, there is a screw/bolt which when removed allows a flap to be pulled down ,to gain access to filter,it is not readily apparent, but there is a fold on the plastic undertray,i've used it 3 times, thou not sure about your model

Stuart, you shouldn't have to take the undertray off. There is a pulldown flap built into the undertray on the passenger side held by two 10mm bolts.  Release it, down It will come revealing your oil filter. Voila!

Itend to remove my under engine cover completely but as suggested you can get away with just a few 10mm bolts local to the filter area, obviously top up the oil to make up the filter loss.

There's an old saying: "Lazy people take the most pains".  Now, whilst I'm not suggesting for a moment that you're lazy, I can tell you from experience that the job's much easier with the undertray removed.  (The Mk2 does not have an access flap below the filter.)   It doesn't take 5 minutes, and also gives you the opportunity to carry out a visual inspection of the engine bay underside.
