Older Ls400s and Insurance issues

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen

I'm insured with Saga for my cars and phoned them to insure a new to me 32 year old Ls400  ....  to continue to be used as a daily driver

They tell me they do NOT now insure cars over age 30  .  and my existing Ls400 insured with them will be not insurable by Saga when it reaches age 30 .  in a couple of years then !

I've insured the new 32 year old lady with Sterling Insce owned by Markerstudy .....  probably a reputable company and at a hopefully keen price ....  wonder what their claims experience might be like tho'

I suspect there comes a point where for the 'main branded' insurance houses have an age cut-off point purely on the basis of an increased difficulty in obtaining components.

It looks as if you'll be spending more time with one of the specialist 'classic car' insurers (and some of them are very good!)

Interesting Malc, especially as Saga was always billed as being for the over 50s lol. In the UK I use LV (for my 24 year old 400) £196 fully comp. In Dubai they wont insure my 400 fully comp and it's the equivalent of £128 pa.

Sometimes you really struggle to see who owns who! You'd like to think better the devil you know but seems not to be the case in this instance. Personally, I've always accepted that insurance is a necessary evil and I have no expectations they will ever pay out! Mercifully I have never put my pessimism to the test but just this morning I've taken out travel insurance and excess insurance for a forth coming trip so who knows.........

When I added my Mk1 LS400 to my combined daily/classic policy that I have with Footman James they were initially reluctant, saying it wasn't a classic, but maybe having four other cars on the policy at the time and wanting to keep my business helped them see sense.

Yet you say Saga don't like it as an everyday driver, so how is it meant to be insured?!

Last week I bought a 1996 Toyota Carina E. FJ simply wouldn't add it at sensible cost to my policy, even with my 2014 RX as they everyday car, so I had to get a separate classic policy. Again it was in a bit of a grey area, but eventually I got a sensible quote off RH Specialist Insurance. policy seems to be with ERS. They've been good to deal with on the phone so far and I used to insure with them and had no complaints (but never had to make a claim).

I've been with RH Specialist Insurance (via ERS) for several years.  They cover my LS400 and my 1999 Honda Accord V6 Coupe for a very reasonable cost, though there are restrictions on the policy.  It's me only to drive, maximum of 3,000 miles per year for each car, and this year they told me the Lexus isn't covered if I leave it on the driveway overnight instead of putting it in the garage.  This is no problem for me, but it might not be convenient for some of you.  This doesn't mean they wouldn't still provide cover, but they might charge more.  Fortunately I've only had to make one claim - for a windscreen on the Honda - and they've been fine to deal with.

I have been with RH for a long time, going back into the last century! They have covered my Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire 346 since the late 1990s and cover both of my LS400 Mk 3 cars on 5000 miles each per year. Neither of these cars is garaged and they are both parked on the drive. Driving of the cars is not restricted to me and my wife, son and daughter can all drive them as named drivers.

Let's hope the insurers see us Lot of Old Lexii Lovers ( LOLL's ) as acceptable and sensible risks to continue to insure to enable us to drive our preferred steeds out into the future ......... 😇
