Engine oil

Hello,

My 2010 Lexus Ls600hl has fsh, but services were 20k or 2 years for first 8 years followed by 10k service intervals or 1 year.

The car runs great with 220k miles and mostly all done on the motorway.

The last 3 services have all used 5w 30.

I am just thinking is it worth going to 0w20 or is it too thin or not good for my car with the mileage?

Also, a question, what oil would have been used for the 20k servicing,  0w20 or long life oil?

I will be doing max mileage 7k a year, mainly local driving so servicing will be done once a year.

They would have hopefully researched it at the time to decide on 5/30 some 3 years and 30k miles ago and at its current mileage and it’s running well you say,   then I would just continue  as is …….. with an annual oil and filter change etc 

Can’t imagine any of this going forward is particularly scientific whatever 🤔

I blindly trust the Lexus garage to put the right stuff in and only advise on the oil if I visit an independent.

I was amazed to find, s few years back, that Kawasaki were putting 0w-60 in my bike. They just said it was the best available.

If I do the oil change myself I put Aldi premier Cru champagne in.

Personally I would not call that FSH as looks like you have some missed services.

Ok, but in the warranty booklet it says 20,000 or 2 years or 10,000 or 1 year and so no service has been missed!

When I had my Audi A8 that was 20,000 or two years and used long life oil.

Thanks Malc the Lexus has dealer SH till 2020,(it was owned by Theo Paphitis from Dragons Den!! Mostly motorway miles) then indy last 3 years, 3 services, so am happy with history, but wanted to buy some lexus car mats and small stuff so thought would buy the oil too and looked at the manual book and gaveme the choice of 0w20 and 5w30.

I am not bothered about price between the two after all  what is £150 compared to the value of the car!

My other car the Bentley uses 0w40,12.5 litres and that is expensive! Lol

Haha. I know it's thinner oil the 0w20, not sure if I notice the mpg difference though, especially in winter.

£40 for Millers 0w20, £35 5w30?

until these past two oil changes I only ever used Wilko semi-synthetic oil for about 120k miles .....  and that was FINE .......  I dare say Mobil or Chevron or Esso whoever made it !

Alas Wilko no more eh !

My indy assured me that at the age and longevity miles of my Ls400 engine the semi-synthetic was most sensible and appropriate

It might be that at 220k miles of age and wear your engine oil needs a rethink

I didn't know you could buy oil from Wilko, mind youz why not it had everything.

For me it will be 5k upto 7k  miles a year and am happy to do a service once a year.

After this service I have to do a bigger service to include  the spark plugs and air filter etc.

I really want to go to 0w20 now, as I think it will be better for the engine, it will be quieter, give more mpg. but as  there are no leaks anywhere I am worried they may occur... I don't think the engine will get damaged though as the oil is being used and recommended by Lexus.

Also not sure if my driving style will affect the oil as  around town am using the hold brake feature, so say a traffic light most of the time the rev counter is zero so its like stop/start function

I was also tempted by Wyns engine flush, but gone against this idea too.

I agree, the maximum would be 5k with my other car and 7k with only this car.

Just to make it worse, Lexus advise 0w20 on LS model from 2010, which mine is!!

Speak to them with the cars history and they will recommend the correct oil, they used to have a thread on PistonHeads where you could ask for your mileage, driving style etc. but now it’s best to pick up the phone and talk to them, TBH rather than going thinner 0-20, I’d go thicker, 5-30 or even 10-40, but speak to the oil experts first.

Thanks, the link is from Opie Oils who are brill. The car is currently using 5w30 and runs great, with my high mileage and wear and tear I think I will leave the 0w 20 option and now not worth pursuing other options, just need to change he oil once a year.

I change the oil and filter every 6 months on my LS400 and IS250 or after 5k miles, whichever comes first but I don't do 5k miles in either car so it's every 6 months.

Thanks, everyone has their own way, I used to do 20,000 miles on my Audi and it was fine (using long life oil), doing every 6 months is also good too, but for me I am happy to do once a year and the oil will cover my mileage of 5k to 7k.

If I was doing motorway miles I would look at 10k or still once a year.

As long a its done regularly, that's the main thing.

Much debate, but sadly not much in the way of data.

I'm happy to stick with annual servcing and 12months/10k changes, although I usually do less than 10k.

For the most part that seems to be the norm in UK and Europe, and 6 months/5k more common in the US. I'm not aware though that engines fail more over here than they do in the US,  so it would be interesting to know if there was any data. In the absence of that then annual changes with a good quality synthetic is good for me.

Looking on forums cars seem to mostly die from things like rust, failed tranmissions, or other issues rather than engines failing due to oil change intervals, unless of course people abuse their cars and either leave it way to long or run on low oil..

It's interesting how 20-50 used to be the de facto standard best quality. Now it seems to be 0-30.

IMO In a watercooled engine the temperature range is not too critical except for cold starts where you need lower viscosity for easy turnover.

Also interesting how fussy BMW used to be on the proper M cars  ( or maybe still are ) for oil during run in and oil changes. Won't bore you with it but BMW were deadly serious about the oil type and pre/post running in if it came to warranty claims.

Amazingly Harley Davidson specialists still recommend 20-50 but then again their engine design is about 100 years old.

I have never noticed much of a difference having used oils from 0-60  to  20-50 SAE. \I just stick to a quality brand.😎

for me Wilko semi-synthetic

oil was absolutely fine for about   qtr million miles    in my Lss'

no sign of my V8  4ltr engine fatigue 😂
