Did any of our foreign members living in UK has ever insured a car, and if so where? I am trying to find a quote for myself, and as it turns out my foreign license brings up insurance cost by 300% !!! If I quote as I would have a full uk licence even with 0 years no claim bonus ( as I cannot prove it here) I can get a quote around 700 quid, but if I say that I have an international license - it goes up to 2100!!!

Any solutions? yes I will exchange my driving licence but it's gonna take some time.

HELP - 2100 is far too much...

I hope it's not off topic... I am looking for a quote on IS200 :)

Get your UK license..... FAST!!!

good luck with the search

it's only the matter of exchanging it - no need to pass the test. Didn't do it yet to not to catch the points as I am driving a company car and they don't care. Will do it asap. The trouble is my gf is in poland right now - will be here next month.. so she can exchange her license then.. and I need insurance now :) But will sort sth out.

I had a BMW 323 insured in London on an Indian license for around 800 pa. However I had 7 years of no-claims from my Indian insurer that I was able to prove. Try Directline.

Strangely, my insurance did not go down after aquiring a UK license. Now I pay just under 700 for the Lexus

Thanks. I tried Directline last night but I couldn't put a diffrent licence there. So I called them and they said it's okay with'em - it doesn't rise the costs at all. So I got it for less then 700 with 0 years no claim bonus. I think that's quite a good deal. :)

Can;t wait till tuesday for my new LEX.

Cheers

It all depends on what type of Licence you currently hold. The normal procedure for holders of international licences is that they are permitted to driving in the UK for one year on that particular licence.

- No need to pass the test.

You must the sit a Standard UK driving test. I believe if you take a test within the year, on passing your test you can exchange your international licence for a UK full licence.

If you wait until your international licence expires, you must then apply for a UK provisional licence and that means you are bound by the rules of a provisional licence holder. I.e. you must display "L" and you must be supervised by a driver over 21yrs and has held a full UK licence for 3 & a half years or more.

Are you sure you're talking about EEC licence?

DVLA:

Residents

If you have a valid Community (EEC) licence, this will authorise you to drive in this country for the periods set out below. Alternatively, you can apply to exchange your licence for a British one at any time.

Provided your licence remains valid you may drive in GB -

Ordinary licence holders:

Until aged 70 or for 3 years after becoming resident whichever is the longer period.

I think that makes my point.
