How Do You Adjust The Handbrake Thru Disc

Hope somebody can help me. My husband is outside trying to take off the rear discs from my IS. He's pulled out the rubber plug but doesn't how to adjust the handrake tension to release the shoes currently holding the disc in place. can anybody explain exactly what needs to be done. Thanks.

from reading it sounds like you need to turn the hole until you can see the adjuster either that or do it from the handbrake end .

The hole is very small and to be honest there isn't much to see. You can get a screw driver in but there is nothing to turn - does anybody know how to operate the adjustor???

OK, so I've backed the handbrake cable off at the handbrake itself but has made no difference. I am right in thinking that once the two 17mm caliper bolts have been removed and the caliper pulled away the disc should just come off? This is driving me mad! Any advice will be appreciated!!!!!!

If i remember right the hole that you put the screw driver in should be at 6 oclock, you might need a light to see inside, its a wheel thing that you turn with screw driver, dont know what way is what, but once you get the hang of it you should be ok.

Nothing at 6 o'clock Gord(on?) only a long horizontal spring. This is a real pain in the a*** now. When I try and pull the disc you can see the inner shoes coming with it. Might have to concede and pay somebody to it.

Thanks for the PM but you were right, at about 5:30 ish I found the small adjuster screw you were referring to and voila the disc was off. Now how on earth do you remove the cotter pin running through the caliper, shims and pads. to say it's seized would be an understatement! Any tips (I've alreday soaked it in WD40).

Seriously, got one side done now, had a problem with the pistons goinf back in (when I pushed one side the other came out). Undid the bleed screw, and pistons went in fine. Will do the other side and the fronts tomorrow, you wouldn't believe this but the pads were worn down to absolutely nowt not a single scrap of friction material in evidence hence the need for the new discs. Don't theses cars have sensors to worn you of this type of thing?

Yes front easier, you wont need any tips now :D

Really dont want to be rude mate, but as u didnt know what you were doing, or what to look for on the brakes I would have left it to someone else!

As for pushing the pads back in, u leave one of the old pads in and then push against the disk, this stops the opposite piston coming out as much.

Make sure you have put the retaining spring on the rear pads back properly, ( the bit where the clevis pin goes over) and also that the little spring pin is properly thru the clevis pin.

Before you do the front get yourself a long breaker bar as the caliper carrier bolts are very tight.

Remember to pump the pedal a few times also before driving and check the fluid level!

I took the job on myself as all reports on here said how easy it is. Did the other rear today in just over 1/2 an hour and that was only because of seized parts. just got one of the front calipers off - see what you mean about those bolts they are tight! Disc is weged firmly in the caliper though so will now trawl through old threads until I find out whether or not to undo any more bolts.

The disc is not held on by any bolts just use hamer to get it off  :D

I hadn't undone the two 14/15mm bolts holding the two parts of the caliper together. All finished now and will be easy if I ever need to do it again. Cheers.

And can I say (without wanting to sound sexist), good on ya for havig a go, more women should get stuck in with mechanical things, would save us blokes a lot of hassle!!
