Whats Involved In Fixing Differential?

At my last service Lexus said the differential was leaking oil and would need looking at sometime. I've another service due very soon. If it's worse etc and they want to fix it then guess its gonna cost me a bit.

Any ideas what the likely cause is and if it's something I could fix myself?

So far I've managed to replace my front pads and discs and I'm keen to try other things but only if there's a reasonable chance of me being able to manage it.

Only places that I can think of where it may leak are the seals or a gasket.

If it's the gasket it's a pretty easy job, if it's the seals it is pretty much a complete strip down to get the seals changed.

OK Thanks. Thats very useful to know. I'll wait and see what they say it is and then decide what to do.

I notice that being an 80k service the differential oil would be replaced so guess they will want to fix it this time.

They mentioned about a slight leak around the water pump too but that doesn't seem to have leaked anymore in the last 10k miles as theres no new pinky deposits around it so that can wait.

Is this the kind of thing that would be needed for the gasket change?

pull rear wheels & drums, remove e. brake cable & brake line, pull axles out, drop driveline, then pull diff. carrier out, etc.

I found it with respect to changing the differential gasket on a toyota.

It still sounds like quite a bit of work
