Slightly silly one-upmanship imho, 7 was getting silly, 8 is just nuts!

Next they're gonna say its got 3 reverse gears

It would be the next logical step given the Merc 7G box has 2 reverse gears :winky:

Why have 8 gears? Next logical step should be an infinitely variable autobox, like the old DAF....... :o

Isn't that just CVT that you can get on the Prius and other small cars?

Think you'll find you get it on the new S Class as well (You certainly do on the new A- Class). It uses a CVT gearbox that's driven by a belt that's impregnated with titanium particles. MB claim it is more robust than a conventional gearbox (well they would wouldn't they).

One thing is for sure though... the gear changes will be silky smooth... because there aren't any !! :D

The RX400h has a CVT aswell, it does make more sense in big luxury cars, as the lack of gearchanges has got to make it smoother, regardless of how silky smooth a normal auto box is

the new S class is very very smooth drive, drove the S 320cdi few weeks back. gearbox is very good 99% of the drive it got overwhelmed when i accelerated hard then slammed brakes.

very nice car though

this LS is much nicer than the last version, and 8speed gearbox does sound like too much though. wait and see i guess
