Vibration And Thump From Boot Area

I did a long test drive of my newly purchased IS200SE and found a vibration when I take my foot off the accelerator going down hill at speed in 6th gear. When I then accelerate there is a loud thump which comes from the area of the boot. Has anyone any idea what this is due to? What can I do to remedy the problem?

nearly all is200's make a thump when accelerating after a coasting period - its drivetrain snatch, but its not loud and felt more than heard.

My experience was that it was definitely heard and felt and I wonder if it can be reduced.

Probably a silly thought but its not the spare wheel moving and not fixed in place??

Certainly worth checking. My gut reaction though is that it is the drive shaft or differential. However, there are no clunks at low speed in high gears though a bit of gearbox whine. Why the vibration and loud thump should happen coasting downhill in 6th I am not sure. Thanks for sharing your experience on this one.

My is is an automatic but i had a similar problem. the thunk was coming from the differential. there are two rubber mountings on the diff. these mounts were worn out on my car. the resultant play on the diff caused movement on the gearbox eventually causing my gearbox casing to get damaged. well my entire gearbox then packed up and a lot of money later was repaired.

check your diff mounts as well as your gearbox and engine mounts.
