There was an international survey of geography knowledge conducted for the National Geographic Society in 2002. The survey found that,

among 18-24-year-old Americans, knowledge of geography was staggeringly bad :-

87 percent could not find Iraq

70 percent could not find New Jersey

60 percent could not find Great Britain

49 percent could not find New York

29 percent could not find the Pacific Ocean

11 percent could not find the United States
