Just driven 330 miles back home without AC. Not nice.

Always ice cold before. Now it might as well not be there.

I dont think the pump is working because when I idle the engine and switch the AC on, the revs do not increase as they used to. I havent had chance to check the fuse yet.

Any other ideas?

And where is the AC pump?

If refrigirant is low/empty then the pump will not kick in and the revs wont rise... id be tempted to take it for a leak test at an AC specialist

Up date. Been out for a root about. No fuses with AC for AC.

Coolant was non-existant in the expansion bottle so ive topped it up. Didnt take much.

Temp guage was a touch lower than normal on the way down to Suffolk and back. Put this down to the rubbich weather.

EDIT; there is a tittering/ticking noise coming from the engine too. Seems to be coming from the rear of the engine rather than the front.

21 is solar sensor circuit-open or short circuit

If the a/c clutch does not cycle, most likely lost refrigerant.

A/c compressor bottom right as you face the engine, you can usually see the clutch click in and out if it's working right.

The noises might just be the injectors ticking as they are working

Thanks for that Mike. I didnt know it had a diagnostice mode. Unforunately though, the LCD on my car is kaput and i cannot read the codes.

Thanks anyway.

The solar sensor is located on the top of the driver's side dash.

I would also have the AC checked at a registered AC specialist.

Sometimes a fractured EGR pipe can cause the ticking noise at the rear of the engine.

On the LHS of the radiator there should be a sight glass for the AC if there is no activity inside it suspect low/no refridgerant.

you will get a code 21 if you perform the diagnostics outside of bright sunlight as it takes a reading from the sensor at the time rather than being a stored code.

23 is low pressure - either a fault with the pressure sensor, or more commonly actual low pressure through a loss of refrigerant

Colin, I much prefer your answer(as it's potentially the cheapest & easiest :D ). It was quite overcast when I checked it yesterday and I don't think it's been gassed for a while.

On a serious note, thank you to all who responded, all advice is greatfully received.

Colin, you were right !

Today I took my car to a small independent garage to get the air-con regassed.

They found a large leak. They fixed it. They found another leak(using just soapy water in a spray gun), they fixed that(right next to the exhaust manifold). They charged the system with new gas and Hey Presto, the Lexus is once again a beautiful place to be on a day like today.

The cost...............£40 all in. I gave them more.

Where are you based? That sound a fantastic deal.

That's a great find, a garage that will actually fix rather than just want to replace expensive parts.

How did they fix the leaks and where are you? I have a small leak which I'm sure is something daft like an o ring and would love to have someone who could actually do a proper diagnosis.

Fingers crossed you are within 50 miles!

Cheers

Pete.

I will take a look at it if Sheffield is any good to you

Sheffield is a lot nearer than London so that would be great. I'm sure its something daft like an o ring as the leak wasn't that fast in fact the compressor still kicks in although ac not cold anymore.

If you pm me when is best for you I will endeavour to get over to you work willing.

Cheers

Pete.
