Cam Belt And Water Pump Changed Today, But Bad News

Recommended Posts

There's an independent Lexus specialist in Swindon, for folk in S-West.

Called Gas& Go, so you can gather they do gas conversion as well!. (Long time Lexus worker, pre-going there)

Chris

Just had a look at the web site, and though I live 25 miles away, reckon they may be the guys to do my cambelt this summer.

Not so sure about the LPG though, as on current mileage would save about £750 per year, though I do intend keeping my LS400 for at least 5 years.

Cheers, Pete

£750 ?????? chuck it my way if its small change to you. Mike

Just had a look at their prices, have they quoted you a price? they also want your car for 24 hrs or 2 days in laymans speech. Mike

Mike,

Since the posting this morning, got me thinking when I take the motor for cambelt change, I'll get details for LPG, as I think this motor is going to be carrying me about for next ten years, so makes sense. And £750 is not loose change (though my daughter seems to think spending £200 on a ball gown for her school prom is okay - cough)

(means the lounge will have to wait another year for that makeover)

Kids eh! far more exspensive than my Lexus. Mike

Well my car will have cost me somewhere approaching £3500 in total by the time I have finished replacing all the brakes and suspension that need doing. Selling my 90 Mercedes 300E has more than covered the cost of it anyway.

Looks like a lot of money compared to some of the cars that seem to sell on eBay for £1500 or so. But this one will have been fully serviced, new cam belt, water pump, brake discs and pads, suspension wishbones etc. and all the worn components on the brakes and suspension sorted out with new lexus parts, and it runs like a top, just perfect.

I realise that some folks will think me crazy for spending what at first glance looks like more than the car is worth, but its worth it to me, And it's here to stay. Over the next year or two I reckon good well serviced with history cars will actually appreciate as they become scarcer. I may even spend more on it and get lpg fitted to it!

I agree , a few years ago i had a 5series bmw , replaced all bushes brake pads 2×shocks, rad etc. head gasket went , bmw said it could not be fixed , a new engine 4000 fittex , i scapped the car and spent 10,000 on a 7 , another money pit.moral of the story is if i got the new engine i would have saved about 7000 euro and had a nearly new 5 .so stick with it...

I love the car. Only had it a few weeks but its so much better than my old 67k 1990 300E. The good thing about the merc is that its appreciating now fairly rapidly! I hope the LS will do the same!

When I drove the Merc across to its new owner and then got the train home and got into the Lexus, it was so much more comfortable, quieter, faster and smother, and I have to say that I am getting about the same in fuel consumption from the V8 as I did from the straight six merc motor, about 23 ish overall so far.

When I bought my first ls 400 a w124 320 was on the list aswell, same sort of build quality every outher car ive been in since the 400 hasn't matched up. I will keep this one ( should have kept my last one ).

The longer you have it the more attached you will be towards it.

Talking of wasting money on cars we are not in the same league as those poor suckers that have to have a new car every 12 to 18 months and every time they drive it off the forcourt about a 1/3 of what they have paid for it goes straight down the toilet instantly and that figure is even more on some cars. We talk of maybe spending a few hundred pounds every now and then keeping our cars in tip top condition, you tell me who the fool is. Mike

That's exactly right! People tend to forget the true costs involved in car ownership especially with newer cars, VAT, depreciation, finance deals, etc.
