Brake Calliper Problems!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, ever since I upgraded my discs and replaced old pads with new my front drivers side caliper seems to keep sticking on.

Now the guy who installed my discs said the the 'pins' had stuck on. So he took them out, greased them up and it seemed to fix the problem for a few months until now, when I drive it the disc and even the whole wheel gets sooo hot!!

The guy came back and suggested that I buy new 'pins', so I did, got some one to fit them and all seem well until the next day, it stuck again.

So now I'm thinking I'll need a new caliper!!

I've found a company that will refurb all my calipers and paint them for £240, is it worth going down that route or just buying new front callipers?

Any one else had this problem?

Replacing just the pins won't cure the problem, you need new boots as well.

Here;s a list of part numbers you need

Part numbers for fronts:
2 x 47715-22070 Pin, Cylinder Slide
2 x 47715-30060 Pin, Cylinder Slide
2 x 47769-50010 Bush, Cylinder Slide
2 x 47775-30070 Bush Dust
Also there is a guide here on how it should be done.
Highly unlikely that your guy did the above.

I used to use copper grease on my slide pins when servicing the brakes but found it tended to dry out very quickly.

I now use high temperature moly grease ( the dark grey stuff) and I find it lasts between services and I've not had once seize since.

Also clean out the slider pin guides on the caliper bracket, I use some twisted kitchen towel soaked in solvent, insert it into the hole and twist it before pulling it out, this removes the old hardened grease.

Failing any of that there's an eBay seller that sells reconditioned calipers for £95. Once you've fitted the new one send your siezed caliper back to them, they give you £30 cash back.

I used them when my front caliper siezed and can recommend them.

Kyle ,can you take the caliper off ,if so do it and clamp the fluid pipe .Then get caliper off and to remove the pistons, which may have a seized piston, put a tyre inflator on the fluid connection to pop the pistons out. They may be corroded so clean them up with wet n dry ,put lithium grease on them and reassemble, this is what i did. Then you may have to bleed the brakes ,worked for me mate.
