2014 Bmw M235I Vs Lexus Is-F Drag Race: Mighty V8 Vs Inline-6 Turbo

Recommended Posts

Hmmm, not too sure about that. The Beemer is quick but it looked strange how the ISF seemed to crawl over the line and you never got to see the whole of the race. Given the extra grunt of the lexus I would have thought that it would begin to pull away once it was over 80mph but I could be wrong.

Either way, we have a V8............and it doesn't look like a rep-mobile that you see in every car park!

Sad to see it lose...and surprising until you read that they were 1 mile above sea level. Doesn't a naturally aspirated engine suffer at that kind of altitude?

Yes it does lose a lot of power. If the race was genuine, the same results would have occurred if they had pitted the 235 against an e90 M3.

I don't care which car or what is faster , it's the car overall I love .theres always going to be technology beating everything .

But yeh I think the isf would have thrashed it before the turbo decided to kick in .

When I see a bmw I see a males genitals looking throught the windscreen .

both cars have similar 0-60 and 1/4 mile figures so which ever car wins its all down to which ever driver reacted quickly when getting off the line.. there is 100 bhp difference between the two cars and considering the BM weighs less and generates around 450NM of torque from Idle and holds all the way to 4500rpm before it starts to drop off implies it will match or beat the IS-F depending on driver reaction times.

thing is 0-60 or 1/4 mile times don't really tell the whole story of a cars performance as I have seen some cars post a slower 0-60 and 1/4 mile times against another only to catch up and start pulling away from the quicker car once 1/4mile is passed..which could be down to to gear ratios, tyre sizes, tyre pressures, drag coefficient design, how far the engine can rev etc..

what these guys didn't include in their test as well was 'in gear' acceleration tests.. as gear ratios and final drive ratios will determine how quick or slow car A will accelerate when say cruising in 4th gear at 60mph when compared to car B doing the same in the same gear and they both floor the throttle.. from 4th to 5th to 6th and so on..

and since both cars don't rev past 7000rpm and BM'S 450NM of torque start dropping off from 4500RPM when compared to IS-F's torque figure of 500NM which doesn't come alive until 5200rpm I will bet my money the IS-F will take this BM during in gear acceleration starts from high gears with its bigger displacement and inherent torque.. but that's my own view..

Hey stu I wouldn't even consider a bm mate . I just don't understand why he has put this post up on a bm being quicker than the isf if he wants one himself .

I was under the impression us isf owners and all other members in this club for that matter love there cars for what they are , I don't care what is quicker etc so why post it .

Weird . Hope he comes back to explain .

Come back bmw site follower lol

Lol. When it comes to cars like this lot of folk (especially vag owners) want pub stats to band around....simples.

I agree with you mate. Buy what makes you happy but most importantly base your decision on realistic and fair reviews! Lol

Sorry if I ruffled any feathers by posting the link to the video - I only did so because the IS-F is a fairly rare car and there aren't that many videos posted that include them.

I was on the Z4 forum (where I have over 500 posts) because I own a Z4 M Roadster. I also own a BMW M5 which I have been thinking of changing, and the IS-F is/was one of the potential replacements.

For what it's worth, a number of the people of the Z4 forum said that they'd rather have the IS-F than the 235. Then again, they don't appear to display the level of bigotry and prejudice against owners of other marques that people on here do. Nor do they tend to post in text speak - but I guess that's a measure of their maturity. And yet they own BMWs - who'd have thought it?!

Ha. Let's be honest there is a lot of badge snobbery from a lot (not all) vag owners. This is exhibited on many forums I am on.

Personably I always buy the best car that's ticks all the boxes on my shopping list.

How do you find the m5? Did you look at the xfr?

It's a Lexus site , talk Lexus not bmw . Have you got a football shirt .

I hadn't realised that it was forbidden to discuss any cars other than Lexus on here - obviously I am still learning.

I do not own, and have never (not since school, anyway) owned a football shirt. I have little or no interest in the game. I'm much more interested in Formula 1 sorry, a car related sport in which Lexus does not participate.

Likewise, but I'm not too impressed with the way that BMW is taking the ///M brand (using it as a marketing tool rather than representing motorsport excellence), hence why I have been looking elsewhere (including the IS-F).

My M5 is a 2001, and I've had it for 8 years now (the longest that I have owned a car, apart from a 911 Carrera 3.2 that I kept for 17 years). It has only done 45k miles and still drives like a new car, which is why I find it so hard to replace - I may get rid of the Z4M instead and replace it with a 996 turbo.

Didn't really look at the XFR - I like a very hard ride, and Jaguars have traditionally been too soft for me.

Well what did you expect putting a video of a bmw beating an isf on the isf site . If we put an isf on a bmw site beating it we would get slaughtered . Might have been good to introduce yourself etc first .like I said just seemed unusual putting a post like that up when your wanting to buy an isf .

Note my spelling is better just for you mate . I got my dictionary out instead of using text words .

Wouldn't like to ruffle your feathers now would I .

Would have thought xfr-s if the budget can stretch would tick all the boxes?

I didn't much like the look of the 08 m5 and heard horror stories about reliability and the I-drive.

The isf certainly has a firm ride but that's what someone should expect from a car like that IMO.

There isn't much to choose from really.

- c63 is horrendous to run cost wise

- m3/m5 are a bit bland for me

- xfr is lovely but depreciates a lot so need a 3 year old one at least

- isf clearly I like it as bought it!

- rs4, issues with car in build up and over priced compared to the above IMO

- porsche cayenne gts is one I will consider next time around but everything is an option!

I am hoping a gsf is released soon so when I change that is an option, also infinity have some interesting super saloons in the pipe line.

I had kind of introduced myself in this post: http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/81109-any-isf-owners-in-the-north-west/?p=826079

There are all sorts of BMW forums - some frendlier than others. The Z4 forum, where I have been hanging out recently, is very acceptant of other cars and, as I said earlier, a number of people there preferred the IS-F to the M235i (I'd include myself in that - the BMW seems to lack any character).

Do appreciate your efforts with the dictionary :-) - and again sorry if the video was taken in the wrong way. I genuinely only posted it because of how rare it is to see an IS-F video, and as many have said (both here and, believe it or not, on the Z4 forum), it was never a fair contest.

Hey Philip,

I was over on the Z4 forum myself for a while. I also wrote a column for Performance BMW magazine for several months.

The ISF is an incredible car in every sense. The ride is considered by some to be too firm, but I don't think it's very firm at all! The E85 3.0i Z4 I had was firmer in my honest opinion.

It's all relative I guess. with a rolling start, coming off a roundabout, I slaughtered a Porsche Carrera 4S the other week! ;)

There honestly aren't many things that can show up an IS-F. Servicing costs are a lot better than the M3 as well.

You also have only 200 or so IS-F's on the road in the UK, making it very unlikely you'll ever see another one! :)

Don't mind Dave, he's a Northerner! lol. ;)
