Tips For Mountain Driving

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have been commuting to work through Caerphilly mountains. I have noticed that the mpg suffers dramatically with uphills. I try to recharge the Battery when going downhill but it still doesn't even out.

Any experience or tips for mountain driving...

Its obviously going to go down on the way up. I dont think theres any way to actually improve the MPG uphill apart from possibly use the paddles?

However, on downhill, you can use the EV button which should help

Thanks Rayaan

Will try that...

Just had another thought. Try sticking the car into eco on the way down and EV too. That way the car will save energy by keeping the AC low too?

google hypermiling techniques - generally they say to focus on maintaining constant load on a car, not constant speed, so (safely of course ;) ) try to keep the eco/power meter in the eco bit up hilll, and resist the temptation to squeeze the loud pedal to keep the speed the same.

On the way down, keep off the accelerator and the brakes as much as possible and carry the momentum down one hill and up the next. Its easier said than done, especially if the road is twisty and you have other vehicles around.

The WhatCar mag did some driver training to increase the mpg in their F-Sport model and it mentioned knocking back on the accelerator just before you crest a rise and letting the momentum and elec motor carry you over the crest and down the hill.
