  1. TRC = Traction control - crude anti-wheelspin system backs off the throttle and brakes the spinning wheel if required. VSC = Vehicle Stability Control - uses sensors to detect impending doom (understeer/oversteer) and tries to sort it out by braking individual wheels etc. SNOW = reduced throttle response - don't think it does anything else. The 300 has the LSD (thank the lord). The ABS effect you felt was probably the TRC (light flashes on dash). I think the VSC bleeps if activated, although I've only had that once - the manual doesn't say much about VSC apart from it exists and it's good!!
  2. Interim services have cost me between £90 and £110. Anybody who is slightly competent could change the pads - it's an easy job.
  3. The plugs should have been changed at the 60K service IIRC.
  4. It could be the plastic trim on the frame around the glass panel of the sunroof. My old IS creaked quite a lot from this area until the dealer took the roof out and refitted it - after that it was much worse Just pushing gently on these black plastic trims caused the same creaking noise, but the dealer "couldn't find it"
  5. If it helps, I get about 2 mpg less from my 300 compared with the 200 (manual). It does depend a great deal on how and where you drive - stop/start driving in town or heavy traffic kills the mpg with the 3l auto, but it does OK on a steady cruise. I'm getting between 28 & 29 - mostly motorway miles and resisting the temptation to nail it too often B) Insurance was about 8% more - quite surprised by that, thought it would be more.
  6. Fluid level? Think that's the same light, but not certain without checking the manual.
  7. Like I said, that seemed to be the going rate - the car market is just like that. Some valuations were under £7K for my 200. I had to haggle a bit to get UP to £8K The 300 was over £7K under list and whoever sold it would have probably got £1500 less than I paid - at 9000 miles and less than a year old, that's quite scary. I accept it's the way it is. Not happy to lose so much (obviously) but I'm not bitching about it. This time I've bought used and will probably keep longer than 3 years, so hopefully it'll be less painful next time Anyway, it's not particularly about the money, it's about the :D
  8. My comments weren't targeted at Lexus particularly - I think the IS does hold it's value quite well (relatively). I just meant that, except for a few special cases, you WILL lose a lot of cash when you change, more so if you sell into the trade no matter who the dealer is. I got offered the same sort of money at other-brand dealers, and it tied in with independent valuations based on age/condition/mileage, so it was what I expected. The IS300 is a year old, so at least somebody else has already taken the biggest hit in depreciation for me.
  9. If it makes you feel any better, I got £8K for my 2001 (51) 200SE when I traded it for an IS300 a few weeks ago - it had done 75K miles though which is what hurt the value most. Unfortunate fact of life that you will get shafted, especially at the dealer.
  10. Try IS300.NET forums lots of tuned (inc supercharged) 300s on there.
  11. It's an offence to leave a vehicle running and unattended on the highway. AFAIK it doesn't apply to your driveway/other private ground.
  12. No I didn't try shifting with the stick - I was already halfway down the hill! Yeah, I know about it not letting you downshift if it would be past redline - I was at walking pace, like I said, it was an icy hill.
  13. Funny, but I had that on Saturday morning. I wanted 2nd to control the speed down the ice-rink that used to be the hill I live on - but in M it wouldn't go below 3. Never had it before but I guessed it was some kind of cold-related protection.
  14. Well it's nowt to do with it being RWD then. I'd get the alignment done. You can still suffer bad tyre wear with the fronts "in spec" but 8000 miles is very poor. I usually swap front to back at about 15K to even them up and get 30-35K for the set.
  15. Heavy wear on the inside of the fronts is pretty much regarded as "normal" by dealers. Assume you're talking about the rears though (otherwise comment about RWD makes no sense) - in which case, sounds like your alignment is off. Try blackcircles.com for tyres - £130+VAT is steep, but then, don't buy tyres from the stealer.
  16. There shouldn't be any "kickdown" effect on a manual - not sure what you're describing but it almost sounds like your throttle is sticking? Bad starting is quite common (if you do a search you'll probably find lots of threads on it) - not sure why though. Mine only did it now and again, not often enough to really be a problem. Kind of embarrassing when your Lexus won't start though :o
  17. A couple of years ago I would definitely have wanted a manual, but now I'm older, lazier and spend too much time on the M62, which means either steady cruise or, more likely, a traffic jam - either way, auto wins for me.
  18. Good move - I've just done the same except it's a salmon. Re the ECU F/W - I would've thought a 2003 would have the revision anyway? I hope so 'cos mine's 2003 too.
  19. Try pulling the nozzle back about 2 inches from fully in and/or holding the nozzle with the trigger to the side. That's what I do and have no problem :P
  20. Yes it should vary according to how much difference there is between the set temperature and the actual temperature. It runs fast if there's a big difference and slows down as it gets nearer. It also runs faster if you are set to demist (windscreen) on the airflow dial.
  21. Also check your pollen filter isn't clogged up. Treat it with RainX or similar - helps a lot to keep it clear.
  22. I think it had sidelights on, but the driver's side bulb was out - hmm, you thought you were sad
  23. Like Colin says, I think it's to do with the "packaging". There's nowhere to put the motor/mechanism and get the spindle through the body. Some cars do have them though - JDM Imprezas for example have a rear-wiper mounted through the glass.
  24. I had a similar problem (not in the IS) which allowed the roof lining to fill up with water and it was the sunroof. There may be a drain which is blocked (I don't know this, I'm guessing).
