  1. Firslty i have worked as a mechanic and mot tester for well over 20 years and have worked at dealrs and indie garages. Waiting 2 and a half hours for a check is not acceptable. Especially when you had booked an appointment time. I currently work at an indie garage were we carry out servicing to our standards and dealer standards and belive me the way i service a car is more in depth than a dealer service. We buy, each year a step by step breakdown of every service on every car as laid down by the dealers and most of them dont even take your wheels of to check the brakes untill way into the cars life. A cars rear brake shoes (sould it have them and not discs) will normally last 60/70k so most manufacturer service mearly check them through a rear inspection hole. The service doesnt remove the drums clean or adjudt the brakes shoes doesnt remove built up brake dust or even put a few extra clicks on the adjusters. So you say they would have to remove the wheels to check the brakes properly, this would inform me that they didnt remove the wheels in the first place therefore they couldnt have checked them. If they didnt remove your wheels what did they actually check for 2.5 hours Why dealers insist on carrying out a full service report is beyond me. If you booked in for number plates and wiper blades then thats what they should have done nothing more nothing less. Sounds like they didnt do any more than that anyway and just passed the time so you thought they were. A full service 12k service on most cars takes less than 2.5 hours and they was only checking your car. Sounds like someone having you on. I just hope you didnt pay for the 2.5 hours they had you sat in the waiting room, and if they didnt, you have to ask yourself why they can give away 2.5 hours labour, is it because they are trying to get more work out of you and you pay that way, or is it because they didnt actually properly check your car in the first place.
  2. Someone is talking out of there bum mate. I have seven kids aginetween 16 and 3 had many cars in that time. All baby seats fit in all cars front or back seats. baby seats are designed to connect to the iso sockets on the back seat or fasten to a 3 point seat belt. Just be carefull putting a baby seat in the front anyway as the air bag doesnt do the baby and favours in a crash.
  3. Missing a massive hole in the lower end of the market too. I have seen many many new bmw 1 series cars. How about a smaller model car never mind a bigger one. Just for you bigger engine guys last week i saw a bmw 135 Thats a 3500cc in a car the size of a focus. I believe the even do a bmw m1 series. and i lways thought if you wanted the bigger engine you just bought a bigger car !!!
  4. Petrol station i use has it own valeting bay, when theres no cars to clean the owner has the lads cleaning the forecourt including the pumps. As a result of this its a pretty clean petrol station. I havnt left there smellin gof fuel even when filling up diesel.
  5. PC2-17-4 Lexus IS200 ISO Harness Adaptor Lead from these people liquidice-2008 via ebay was 99p works perfect just having a break now from trying to set everything up. The stereo very complicated. I have the stereo set colour wise (out of the 93 ? possibles) and 6 of the radio pre sets done. Hvae been messing now trying to get a Lexus logo set as a back ground on the screen. I need to pull the stereo out again as i am not quite happy with the fitting theres a bit of a gap above the stereo surround. nothing major just being picky really.
  6. ahh the merkin ! the wig for women ! Merkin wig for women ?????? a merkit is a wig for the pubic area and can be worn by either s*x !!! Why personally anyone would need one i cant understand.
  7. i find maxxis tyres to be about on par with federals. I have and do use both its just normally federals are cheaper only a couple of quid but when you want 4 plus vat its over a tenner more. I dont do millions of tyres probably 200 a month most of which are a budget range either federals or maxxis. My garage was a maxxis autherised dealer but we got out of it as they promised to be cheapest tyres and they werent alot of the time. Also my garage is in Manchester and Maxxis advertises at one of the Liverpool based football clubs you be suprised how many people say sod that there scouse tyres.
  8. i have these rear lights there the led type i changed them as i was fed up with everyone asking why have i spoiled it by putting boy racer lights on the back and was really fed up of teling everyone that they are lexus lights as in on a lexus and all the boy racers copied the style of this car linky i tinted the fogs with tinting paint flatted then off a little with wet and dry the gave them a clear coat ontop (they are redder than they look in the picture)
  9. I posted an answer a while ago to your very same question. I recomened a set of Federals all round. Just to put my money were my mouth was i bought a full set myself and put them on to try them this was about a month ago I havent took them of yet. I added what they cost me (as a mechanic who uses a national suplier) and got into trouble for it when i offered to get them for the guy. So i cant do this now but i am sure there were some on ebay when i looked for them there are cheap enough have a good directional tread pattern work well in the wet and have reasonable wear life. AS for tyres in the snow any road tyres will be crap in the snow this site is full of discusion of how bad the is200 is in the snow.
  10. just purchased one of these linky already have new surround, Needs blending and painting also have iso lead on order should all come together over next few weeks
  11. Visit My Website NOT MY WEBSITE ITS A LINK just read some of the comments of the bottom of that page. Even the muslim people are questioning the validaty of that particular march. One person even asks for proofs of where in the quraan it say protesting is ok. JUst proves that the people that run the site Islam4uk are real extreamist and not the voice of the comman "normal" muslim I read many of the pages on that website an dhave seen demands for even buckingham palace to come under muslim law. I also read one page were they cancelled a meeting to discuse the diffrence between muslim and christian beliefs as in their opinion the christian people who wished to attend "were not suitable" ha ha were strong intheir beliefs more like it. What a load of tosk the more i read abotu them the more i see they really are a bunch of extreamist. some of the things they prepose to imply are nothing short of racism and should be seen by the law as such and dealt with accordingly. The bnp are dealt with under the law so why not these extreamist.
  12. Would parading past my local mosque carrying a coffin representing all the people killed by the Taliban on 9/11 be ok with you. Or carry a coffin round any local muslim populated area representing all the soldiers killed in iran iraq afgan conflicts. Bloody dam right it wouldnt be. I have no problem with people making a statement about their beliefs but to do it in such a place and in such a mannor is wrong. The only reason for doing it in wooten basset is to maximise publicity, on the other side it will cause even more racial problems with the muslims. Like the muslim members have said not all of the muslims are extreamists but with protests of this manner, people will just hate the muslims all the more thats all of them not just the ones that protest. The comman man and more importantly the yobs on the street, who will retaliate wont diferenciate between extreamists and the "normal" muslim community. This protest i belive to be wrong in the place it is happening and shouldnt be allowed to happen. The police can stop it under any given law they choose. Hell, i was once told not to do a charity car pull as part of the route was on the main road, and doing so would be illegal. A funeral is one thing carrying empty coffins isnt a funeral, its an out and out protest and should be stopped or not given the time of day publicly to protect the "normal" muslim community
  13. quick question to the 2 muslim posters. Would i be correct in think that the quraan teaches that there is one god and only one god. The bible teaches the same thing but also teaches acceptance of other peoples beliefs. This country in ment to be church of england and as such has the bible has its holy book. Therefore acording to our holy book we have to accept other people beleifs including muslim beliefs. If the quraan teaches only one god no matter what then a muslim, by religion wil not accept any other beliefs. I wouldnt say i have studied religion but i did attaned church for 15 years and studied the bible a little during that time. I dont believe in god personally too many unanswered questions and no proof ( not saying its wrong to belive its just not for me). I have friends that are religious from morman to witnesses. I also spent about 3 years living slap in the middle of a heavily populated muslim area of manchester so have heard bits about other religions they are all pretty wel much the same to me i really cant see why there are religious wars at all. The bible is full of contradiction and half truths The whole reason of Jesus being born where he was born is questionable so right from the start its flaured. Religion, to me has just to many unanswered questions. Maybe its just me asking "but why" or "how" too many times.
  14. Not really the dealers problem mate. How often do you have full five seats and full boot. About once a month for me when its my turn to drive on a scuba dive trip. Your right though there isnt anywere for your wheel if you have a space saver if you have full boot. Again not really the dealers problem, they certainly dont build cars with that in mind they certainly dont make them mechanic friendly either.
  15. VSC is vehicle stablitly control last time i checked fellas are we all sure its even an engine fault. I havent come across one of the new models yet but i know for sure if its a bad engine fault the limp home mode does cut in and does put on the vsc light but also the engine management light. The car ecu decides if its a bad enough fault or not to put the car in limp home mode a cat shouldnt put the car into limp home as limp home is normall only cut in if the fault could cause the engine serious damage by continued use. IE a miss fire. If the cat falls the worse that can happen is the lambda sensor after the cat tells the ecu the cat is faulty. The lambda sensor its self could be faulty especially if you have had several egr faults, did you now was the egr stuck open or closed. The lambda sensor could be sooted up and giving a false reading which would lead a tech to think the cat was not working. I have fallen for this myself and had to refund the customer the cost of the cat and i replaced the lamdba sensor free of charge for his trouble of having to bring his car in more than once. I have since learnt this fault and wont be dong it again. Bottom line is your car has come up with cat fault is it the sensor flaggin up a cat fault because the cat it reads from is faulty or is it the sensor thats faulty.
  16. You get a space saver because they are cheaper and perfeclty usable to get you home and give you more boot space. The tyres are fine the reason they resctric you on speed is so you dont go booting it round bends with odd size wheels on and put yourself in a ditch. THe warnign is there as a warnign so you drive carefully it covers the manufacturers back should you crash whilst using it. Its all about sue or be sued these days. Even macdonalds have written "caution hot" on anything hot from there place after a guy sued for burning his mouth on a hot apple pie, he didnt realise it was that hot. I have done 75mph on a space saver for about 10 miles wasnt a problem as long as your aware it wont handle normally when on a bend. As for the upgrade to alloy,Its not an option on most cars because it simply wont fit in the hole made for a space saver. Ford do a duel fuel focus, the gas tank goes in the spare wheel well and they give you a can of tyre weld/repair. The new mini comes with a can of tyre weld and a compressor and no wheel at all as do a lot of cars. The real top end stuff doesnt come with anything the 355 ferrari has nothing if you get a puncture even the tool kit is an option. The though behind it is if you drive a ferrari you wont be changing your own wheels anyway so why give you the tools to do it.I have, amongst other things a 1985 Lotus esprit turbo this has a space saver and thats from 1985 so a space saver is not a new idea
  17. no just a noise like the cd was spining but not sitting right and was rubbing on something. I did get the erroer 3 a few weeks ago but i turned it of for half hour it was ok after that. It wouldnt even recognise cd 4 was in the stereo last week just went from cd 3 to cd 5. Cd 1and 2 just didnt select just clicking noise like something was jammed cd was the noisey scraping one and cd 5 actually played.
  18. pulled my stereo out today just to have a poke around to see why it would only play 2 out ofthe 5 cds that were in it. only undid 2 screws and pulled the top off. All the cds were out of line i simply stuck my finger in the middle of the cds to line them all up again. put the lid back on refitted it in the car it works fine now ejected all the cds played them all everything seems fine. could just be a fluke but when re fitted i really tried to jam it again pressing the cd up and down buttons before it had chance to load the first one pressing allsorts of things seems fine at the moment. only undid the 2 srews shown beautifully by the wifes fingers lol Anyway whilst the pic is here any idea of what the wiring is just incase it starts playing up again. the arial is obvious. The main socket in the middle is a mix of feed and speaker wires the wire on the left of the pic was a mistery just one single wire in the socket that didnt do anything when i unplugged it. I have ordered a iso lead for the car and it only has the main centre lead conectors on it. Any one know what the single wire is that plugs into the left socket in the pic. I didnt check it out as if the stereo goes again i will be binning it. A wiring diagram would be real good
  19. Rear Fog Lamps The inspection of rear fog lamps is confined to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1 The above is copied direct from testers manuel. Doesnt mention nearside fog light there fore its not in the test and as such cannot be failed. Obligatory rear position lamps (rear lamps) Lamps required by Regulations to be fitted to a vehicle to indicate its presence and width when viewed from the rear. They must show a steady red light to the rear, visible from a reasonable distance Also copied from testers manuel, this is were the problem origianates. The reason for rejection from one section cannot be applied to the method of inspection for another item An obligatory light position light must show correct colour, a non abligatory light isnt in the test. The problem is how the manuel is used. Its actually clear cut. As for the vt32 is says "should" be issued not must be. The mot test is very clear when read correctly. If its not there in black and white it cant be tested and if it is in black and white its very simple. THe only point to argue is the "term" excesive as in excesive wear. your idea of excess will be diffrent to mine i always get told excesive is to the point of falling off.
  20. superb post dave good find clears that one up. THe law does state "use" as i suspected but its the definition of "use" i was wrong about. The car does have to be insured to be just left parked on the road, on the grounds that you could "use" it. This law is as silly as the mot test. So a guy with a car locked in his garage as its winter snd he doesnt take it out in the bad weather (i know lots of classic car owner that do this) has to have it insured because he could use it.That will be next. The guy you posted about had no way he could have driven that car, what was it no gearbox oil and seized on brakes and was still done for it on the basis the law didnt want to decided the terms of "use". They basicly desided he could use it because they couldnt and didnt want to determine between being able and not able to rotate the wheels. How silly. I am not sprised the guy appealed the case. I dont agree with it but if thats the law then thats the law.

  22. Sorry i actually ment parked, as in you put it there when it was insured. then the insurance ran out it doesnt suddenly become illegal its not illegal to have your car parked with out insurance
  23. Yes i agree again Dave should be issued but not required. Thats my point you dont have to use a vt32 its testers choice. Which testers guide are you using dave i dont know your history but if your using an internet one it may be out of date. The testers gudie is updated very often with the new online testing system updates are emailed as and when needed the paper testers guide is now vertually useless unless the garage downloads the updates and staples them into the guide. Vosa evantually send out paper updates but these normally arrive weeks after the changes. The testers guide is available on the vosa computer and your encourgaed to use this rather than the paper version. Last garage inspection we had i didn tknow how to access the computer version and was moaned at, nothing vosa could do but they still moaned. As for car being presented in the dark i still cant fail it regaurdless of what i know happens outside of the mot test bay. Like i said i know one family that swap wheels so the car for test has the best tyres. I can only test the car as i see it onthe ramp at that time. The family could drive in and change the wheels in my car park theres nothing i can do about it. Its not within my powers to fail something that i know happens outside of my test bay. I can in theory fail any car for any reason i like wether its legal and i end up in trouble is another story. The mot test has many downsides and stupid rules but i can only test within the limits of what i am instructed to, and what happens outside of the garage is not my relm. Heres a stupid one for you, I fail a car for corroded hole in the boot near the suspension mount. The guy takes his car away places an old oil can over the hole and glues down his carpet, Pass or fail?? i cant see the hole from underneath the car. Its a pass i have to presume its been repaired correctly as no one in there right mind would carry out an inapropriate repair on a structural part of the car. Some gareges ask customers not to underseal any welding required for test they are not alowed to do this, i can only test what i can see if a repair is covered in underseal or stuck down under the boot carpet i can only test it as i see it if i cant see it i cant fail it.
