  1. I could be wrong but as far as i am aware the crime is "driving car on road with no insurance" As far as i am aware parking it without insurance wasnt a problem only using it. The only thing required to park a car on the road is road tax as far as i know.
  2. Is that actually a requirement for the MOT test? I know that no white lights should show at the rear legally (except reversing lamps) but I was not aware that it formed any part of the test. I thought that the manual only covered obligatory lights but not any non obligatory lights......in fact it states that any optional lights should not be tested. The requirements of the MOT test and the requirements to comply with the law are, unfortunately, subject to wide variations. you know what mate their is so many grey areas i dont care, all my lights work as they should......... i thought if they were their and working they must work as they should ie be red not white....but at the end of the day its up to the tester. as the tester i would just remove the bulb/sharps, job done!! Dave is right about the lights Obligatery lights only are in the test. Nearside fog light is not in the test, even if it is showing white light to the rear. All other lights, the testers manuel states "must show red light" Or "must show amber light" In reason for rejuection collumn " show any other colour than permited" Also first collum states "this test apllies to all obligatery lights" nearside fog light isnt obligatery. It is down to the testers discretion if he fails a car or not but he can only fail on items that are actually in the test. I dont recall the words "no white light must be shown to the rear" anywhere in the testers manuel. It does however say "check the light emits a light of the right colour" The led washer jets that were popular a while back showed lights of all colours but as they were not in the mot they passed. I was in my mates car when he got a ticket for having them even though i disconected them as the copper wrote the ticket. Under the seatbelt section ( unless they have changed it and i havent read the email yet very unlikley as if you dont read the updates they stop you testing) the rear of a car needs either one 3 point belt and a lap belt or both 3 point belts. so a lap belt is not required. If the car had the buckle and no belt it would be a fail. As long as the buckle and belt are missing its a pass.
  3. Yes Dave your almost fully correct. The mot test doesnt work under the full arm of the law only section 45 of the road traffic act. If a vehicle i test has its lights masked or disconected and the owner say he only drives it during the day i have to pass it. Even if its dark when he brings it in. AS for the vt32 Its there for the testers protection really, evn though its ment to be there to tell customers of things that are border line. Most people selling a car will imediatly disgaurd the vt32 as soon as they walk out the door. They wont want a buyer to know it only just passed. There is now a section onthe mot certificate thats says yes or no if a vt32 was issued. If you see an item that is very borderline fail but it should pass issue a vt32 to cover your back as i point that you saw it but at the time you saw it it wasnt bad enough to fail. A tyre with 1.6mm of tread is a pass although i know in half a day it will be illegal. The mot state below 1.6mm so on the limit is still a pass. If the police stop the car the next day the first thing the driver will say is "it only passed the mot yesturday" If you issued a vt 32 your ***** will be covered so to speak. The mot test is only a check to say the vehicle met minimum requirements at time of test so it doesnt really matter if i issue a vt32 or not the car was ok when i saw it issueing a vt32 covers my ***** that i did see the fault. I could tell the cars owner but he will always say "know one told me nothing" so the vt32 is there to cover me thats what i use it for AS i am sure your aware there didnt use to be such a certificate. I know many customers in my area that "share wheels" as it were. They put on the good set between them which ever car is due a test. I even know a customer that has an incorrectly spaced number plate he velcros on correct ones for test then takes them of again before he even leaves my car park. Theres nothing i can do about it. Personally it doesnt bother me its not my rules flounting.
  4. Bravo Dave you have a better understanding of the mot test than an mot tester LOL. you got higher marks than one set of answers on here. 1 How long does an mot last?. an mot certificate will be post dated automatically for up to one calender month. An mot test is valid for about 30 seconds. Its a test that says the vehicle met the minimum requirements at the time it was tested, it doesnt mean the vehicle is in satisfactory condition. This is writen on the front of every mot certificate 2 How long after it runs out do you get to sort it out? The vehicle can be without mot for as long as you like as long as you dont USE it on the road. It can however be parked on the road.. You do nt require mot to park it on the road only to drive. You can drive it, without a test, to and from the testing station as long as your booked in for a test. 3 You going away on holiday your mot runs out while your away can you have it done before you go? Yes have it done before you go it will be post dated upto one calender month. 4 If your car fails and you dont think it should have what can you do about it? can you complain? if so who to?You can complain no matter what your reasons, up to 28 days and 3 months for corrosion. Not much point though really all that happens is you arrange for your car to be tested at a garage of your choice which you pay for, at ful test price ( which if i remember correctly is now in excess of £54. Vosa send someone out to test the vehicle what ever his/her findings are stands. IT could still fail it could even fail on something it didnt origianally the tester will and can only test it as he/she see it on the day. You dont get your car fixed or the fault you found repaired. You drive away with the result of the test by vosa standing. 5 If you buy a car with say a 10 month mot on it and you later find a serious fault can you complain? if so who to? answer as above. 6 You take your car for an mot test on the way there ALL your lights fail stop lights indicators the lot. what should you do? If your vehicle has no side lights are disconected or perminantly masked you need no other lights, as long as you state the car is nly used during daytime. If the owners gets caught using it in the dark thats not your problem espesialy if you issued an advice certificate. 7 You take your car for test it fails on a passenger side mirror missing although your driver side and interior are pefect is this right? AS long as you have interior mirror and drivers side this is all thats needed. AS long as you have the driver side and one of the other 2 its a pass. 8 Your spare tyre is flat in the boot, you know it is should you tell the guy testing the car or hope he doesnt notice? spare tyre isnt in the mot doesnt matter what state its in. 9 Your rear fog light passenger side is smashed and when turned on shows real bright white light to the rear should it pass. Passenger side fog light isnt mentioned in mot so cant be failed what ever condition its in. The police wont like it but as a tester thats not your problem. 10 The centre lap belt inthe back of your car got chewed by your dog whats the cheapest way to get round the problem ( not that i would advise you to do what i suggest just showing how bad the mot test is) Centre seat belt can be removed. As long as yo have 2 of the three belts in the back the car will pass. if the police stop the car and some one is sat in the midlle thats their fault not yours.
  5. Lights on a car are not even an mot fail that law needs to be changed. You dont need lights on your car for it to pass an mot test. Any body want to argue the poitn please be my guest LOL i been testing for 20 years and have never agreed with the stupid rule btu its not my rule so i have to live with it
  6. Ye the ceramic should be on the bottom of the bulb. Without the ceramic the light from the bottom of the bulb bounces up via the bottom of the headlight and gives of a glare. Doesnt really matter which way round the wire is on the back as long as the ceramic is on the botom of the bulb when in the headlight.
  7. Agree with above. Pay of what you had then get small amounts of credit and pay it back just to prove your "reformed" as it were. My best mate was left a house when his uncle died but it needed loads of work. So he stayed living at home with parents as did his partner. They saved for everything they needed refusing to borow money to spend on the house. It was only a little 2 up 2 down terrance house but it was theirs and didn owe anything on it. Some time after movign in the council stepped in with compulsary purchase order. they sold the house and got £40,000 for it ( not alot but was clean and clear) they up graded to a new house costing £120,000 despite the fact they had 40 grand for a deposit they coldnt get a mortgage for the diffrence. They to had poor credit rating even though they had a bank full of cash and never borrowed anything. They took out a credit card and spent a bit each month for 3 months then went to the bank again with a bit of convincing they finally got sorted out. Bad debt is as bad as no debt.
  8. I used G3 cutting compund and a buffer. Only because i had both. T cut and a rag will do same job just take you longer. Took about 2 minutes to do both my way lol
  9. I suggested this very thing months ago. I am north west rep in the Rover coupe owners club. Works well on that group. Instead of looking through the whole site to see whos who and whats going on just pop into your region. Also you can post who saw who (what registration) where and when. That way you can keep up to date with each other easliy. I know where most of the other coupe owners are in my area and they know where i live theres alot more friendly group that way. You dont have to join in with each other its your personal choice. The area rep has now power on the site just acts as a middle man should some one want to be introduced to another member in that area and keeps his/her ears and eyes open as to whos selling what who wants what that kind of thing. The coupe owners club is a lot tighter knit site because of this. Hardley any one post as in mails anything. If you dont mind waiting, with a few emails and messages people are glad to drop stuff of at there mates house who will drop it of at his mates and eventually you get your stuff. Usually takes 2 weeks top to bottom of country for something like a bumper. Works well.
  10. Reliable stereo would be nice, as would rear wiper about 50 more bhp and 4 wheel drive would be real nice. The rear wiper and the 4 wheel drive is asking too much i guess and 50bhp with out loads of expence isnt really do able. Induction kit and exhaust most of you pay in excess of 1/4 of the cost of the car for these upgrades. Not for me. A pal of mine owns an aristo and is currently spending in excess of £2000 on a bigger single turbo and bigger lift cams. This seems crazy when he got the car for £1000. My question would be how much is too much when modding your car to get the bits you wanted on it in the first place???
  11. must agree its pretty vital but is there anything you can do about with out a garage and parts. So not much point monitering it unless its for show. Besides unless it goes way out the car will just keep on running and get you home. Even then if it does go out the management light will come on so you will know somethigs wrong.
  12. Gages for the sake of gages then. air temp, exhaust temp air fuel ratio, nothing you can do about either not a 70mph down the m6 there isnt anyway lol. Liking it lads just for looks but not compleatly useless. i just couldnt think of anything else that you really/actually need to keep an eye on while driving and to be honest i still cant lol. Its all about the looks but its a look i like so its on my list.
  13. Just out of intrest guys what extra gages are you putting in there. Is there anything else you need to keep an eye on thats not already on the dash. I have a pillar mounted pod on my turbo coupe has boost gauge and oil temp. The car didn thave these as standard and as i turned the boost up it was a good idea to keep an eye on both. I really like the look although i would probably try to turn the pod slightly towards the driver and i cant think of what gages i would put in there.
  14. If your going to paint the bulb it will need painting between 5 and 7 oclock on the bulb. That should do it but questionable as to how long the paint will last and what fumes it will give of when the bulbs get hot and what it would do to the bulb.
  15. A car with a dmf doesnt have springs in the friction plate the dmf supplies all the springing required. I have fitted many dmf now and have never had one which still retains the springing in the friction plate. And i agree that the variation in torque out put of the 3 cyliner engines will need more damping there fore a 6 cylinder engine will require less damping which re enforces my reason for the Lexus not to require one. The smoother 6 cylinder engine souldnt require one. Am am pretty certain i have now agreed with the point the Lexus has a dmf i never disagreed that it didnt i just pointed out that i didnt see the point in it having one. Every reason you have pointed out what the dmf is used for is exactly why the Lexus, with low torgue and smooth power frequencey, shouldnt need one. Its a very expensive part to put on an engine which shoudl be smooth enough without one.
  16. made with my own fair hands mate. 2 litre mondeo has a weird exhaust with a box on each side but only has one exit pipe. so it has a big C shaped rear section all i had to to was make a y shape piece i got to 90 degree bends sliced them down the middle and welded together.. i then welded the y piece into the mondeo system added 2 new old style xr3i back boxes with the standard tail pipe chopped of and 3 inch chromes welded on. As for mounting i just welded them on as and were i thought it needed one use mounts i chopped of scrap exhaust. .I sat down with my exhaust catalogue and look through then decided to make my own. i used to use a front pipe backwards to make twin tale pipe systems. the 2 into 1 part on most down pipes were good for that. The system is very very slightly louder than standard and you cant actually tell from inside the car. Obviously i had to cut the bumper that was the easy bit just took a template from the other side and marked and cut the passenger side of bumper. The back box system cost me about £30 in total. that was for the boxes and the tail pipes. the pipes i took of a mondeo weeks before hand the mondeo boxes were rotton but there was enough good pipe for me to use. The new mondeo pipes would have been about "£70. As you can probably tell my idea of modding is on a budget. lol. not that i need to i remember my days as an apprentice when i was skint all the time and anything i wanted i had to make or adapt so i still do it now.
  17. come on people theres been 140 views os this thread somemore answers please. Proves my point in a way most people dont know or dont want to know abotu the mot test
  18. Best score yet is 6or7 out of 10 and a fellow mot tester has answered the questions......one question i will check tomorow but i believe it to be only half right wont post whats right or wrong yet as i want other to answer as well some people could find it very informative. Answers i will be posting are from testers guide which is available from any library although vosa dont want you to know that as they dont want the commonman to know as much as the testers do, its just saves arguements that way.
  19. The dual mass fly wheel is all about power and torque. Its also about damping engine vibration throught the drive train The damping force your talking about is usually taken up by the damping springs in the friction plate. When the engine has lots of torque you cannot put enough springing into the friction plate so they use one long spring around the edge of the duel mass flywheel (internally). So the dual mass is all about giving a smoth take of like you state. It also smooths out the power from the more torque produced from powerfull engines. Another reason why the Lex shouldnt really need oneits a 6 pot engine wich is pretty smooth anyway. Its mainly 4 pot diesels with big power strokes that have a dmf I have attended an LUK training course on dmf as when i first heard about them i didnt have a clue so booked myself on the course. The whole perpouse of the dmf is to dampen the engine torque and vibration when they manufacturer cant get enough springing into the standard and usual place, which is the friction plate. Luk was the first company in europe to develope the DMF. Just out of interest a Transit van has a dmf but you can now buy a solid state flywheel as a direct replacement. they fly wheel falls into to parts. And the mondeo diesel has the same engine and gearbox set up so same problem. The new gold diesel has one as does the vauxhall range of diesels. Infact i havent come across one on a petrol at all YET. which is why i was suprized when i was told the Lexus has one. The fact still remains 2 out of 3 of my suppliers who supply me Luk parts dont list one for the Lexus, and the one that does has never supplied one and couldnt get me one anyway. Neither of the suppliers have are one shop places and they are very realey wrong. If ormi says they have one then like i sauid before they have one hes the Toyota mechanic after all. http://www.luk.com/content.luk.de/en/produ...new/zms_new.jsp have a look on that site for more details on dmf
  20. sill plates like these to come this is an engine cover i had made for my coupe turbo. Obviously it will say Lexus and not rover lol
  21. headlight pics as requested headlights headlights before headlight back lights leds with slightly tinted fog lights just to dull them down a bit oh and a twin exit exhaust
  22. NGK Iridiums for me i get the for about £38 from my local supplier. Put them in and forget about them, should be good for 60,000 miles. My lexus has 147,000 on the clock now dont think i will have the car at 200,000 lol
  23. I had to take the console out compleatly loose the rear ashtray and drill 2 holes throught the steel underneath the ashtray. The arm rest has 2 long spikes on it so it just slots into the holes you drill. They may need trimming slightly so they dont foul on the cup holders underneath. I took the cut holders out and welded to nuts to the bottom of the spike and bolted them in as well. The arm rest when down actually sit direct ontop of the console glove box so its pretty secure with out it being bolted in. The arm rest i used locks in the upright position so you can still use the glove box underneath its when its up right that its pretty wobbley thats why i bolted it down. If you come to sell the car and the new owner doesnt like it simply lift the arm rest out and drop the ash tray back in. I was amazed how well it actually fit. And as it was free its about the best mod pound for pound you can get. the Lexus armrest are in excess of £200. Finding a leather one from a 405 may be difficult. the one i had was an executive model with full leather air con and everything. The guy over heated it and warped the cylinder head. It was so bad the cam wouldnt fit back in
  24. few question with regaurd the mot test. 1 How long does an mot last? 2 How long after it runs out do you get to sort it out? 3 You going away on holiday your mot runs out while your away can you have it done before you go? 4 If your car fails and you dont think it should have what can you do about it? can you complain? if so who to? 5 If you buy a car with say a 10 month mot on it and you later find a serious fault can you complain? if so who to? 6 You take your car for an mot test on the way there ALL your lights fail stop lights indicators the lot. what should you do? 7 You take your car for test it fails on a passenger side mirror missing although your driver side and interior are pefect is this right? 8 Your spare tyre is flat in the boot, you know it is should you tell the guy testing the car or hope he doesnt notice? 9 Your rear fog light passenger side is smashed and when turned on shows real bright white light to the rear should it pass. 10 The centre lap belt inthe back of your car got chewed by your dog whats the cheapest way to get round the problem ( not that i would advise you to do what i suggest just showing how bad the mot test is) Any one want to hazard a guess tot he above questions please do so. Even omri can have a go they change the rules so often its hard to keep up lol The first 3 questions i get asked often, the next 2 are questions the ministry dont really want you to know the last 5 are examples of the mot test oddaties I have been a tester for 20 years or so i have been married 13ish years my wife could answer the question then again i cant work the washing machine so its only fair i guess
