  1. Mine is £244. The problem is that anyone who has experienced an accident (even though they are totally innocent) is more likely statistically to make a claim. Insurance companies have this built into the algorithm which calculates premiums. Maybe try classic car insurance. You maybe right on the edge of that.
  2. Look at the cabin pollen filter. If this are gundgy they often clog up the air flow. Air-con will usually clear anything.
  3. You could advance Malc's suggestion by gently pumping some heat into the back, from a hairdryer into the bulb hole. Half in and allowing the air to escape often works.
  4. I never understand this debate. Oil is now so cheap at EuroCarparts that their own fully synthetic oil is SN standard as so superior to anything else for abour £20 for 5 litres (after the usual 20-30% discount) why would one scrape to save on semi-syntheitic at about £4 cheaper? Just buy the real deal and a Bosch/Hengst/Mann filter. A top quality oil change for £25, what is there wrong about this, given a replacement engine is £3,000?
  5. I agree with almost everyone. It is amazing that my very basic £85 Halfords Garmin had lifetime updates for Europe, gives great accuracy and is better in every respect from the onboard Lexus SatNav. The only reason to update it, is it is there and a backup. The lack of trailing wires is also good. Why Lexus do not telephone Garmin or TomTom and do a licensing agreement on a far superior product is one of life's mysteries.
  6. I did not disconnect the battery but put it into the box in the boot, and it uploaded OK.
  7. That is amazing that someone here can do a complete fix. It would be useful if all this precious data could be added to a Lexus LS data bank of 'how to fix stuff yourself for no money but with a lot of advise'. Such simple information is priceless and so satisfying when it works. I still think on the 2002 LS 430 you can disconnect with no problems as I did.
  8. Not sure what a Mk4 is, but in my 2002, I took the battery out and no ill effects. The clock, stereo etc all go back to zero and need to be reset. Obviously, you then need to lock it manually.
  9. Had a VW Polo many years ago that failed an MOT because of the horn. I was annoyed as I had not tested it. The garage cleaned up all the terminals and it worked fine. The fact that some 'electricity' is getting through, might suggest iffy connections. I would clean and check every connection. You could take a lead directly from the battery to one horn and see if it works. Don't forget, these horns are right out in the front where the wet, and salt, and grime are. They do corrode but one does not notice as one uses the horn (in the UK) or infrequently.
  10. Had a quick look under the steering wheel today and could not find the 'easy screws to take out'. It looked a lot more complicated on this 2002 model. Am I missing something?
  11. There are some good videos on You Tube that suggest that most of the problems stem from a £1.50p white nylon plastic cogged wheel. As usual, you cannot buy it separately.
  12. I am happy to leave the motor in and accept the up down movement when I get in and leave. Is it possible therefore to just remove the panel, screw the square nut out so the wheel moves away from the dashboard, and leave it at that? I will disconnect the battery for 2 hours just in case any electrics plus the airbag cause problems.
  13. This response is amazing, and typical of good car sites where people are like minded and care. Any further advise is much appreciated.m
  14. My LS 430 may have the dreaded steering motor problem. On the square joystick to the left of the column the steering wheel goes up and down OK. It also goes up and down as one gets into and out of the car (on the ignition key). However, it will not go in and out. One can hear a motor working but no movement. Any ideas, apart from a massive bill at Lexus. It is livable with, but I would like to come out about 2 inches from the dashboard. Is it manually adjustable?
  15. UPDATE I went with this outfit for £30. http://satnavdvd.co.uk Took two days to arrive by normal post. Like an idiot (and with no instructions) I thought it went through the stereo! You Tube had a Lexus video. I have since popped it into the SAT NAV box in the right of the boot and all seems well. It has updated OK. Will have to see how it performs. It is the 2012 version. Wish it was newer but it is not at Lexus prices.
  16. The problem is if you crash it or it is stolen you will only get the 'market price' plus maybe £750 as it is a minter. Say £2,750?
  17. I'm in the same boat. My offside rear 5 years ago was said to be 'misting'. The car has since then done few miles, but my philosophy is to carry on till trouble arrives as the car drives beautifully.
  18. Tyres do advance. The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance are a Which magazine best buy and pretty reasonable priced. Also very quiet.
  19. Good point, but in my experience bushes degrade over 10-15 years, and don't just 'go funny'. I feel something more fundamental is at fault here.
  20. When they say 'for US models in effect' does that really make a difference as all Lexus Ls cars were really made fro the US economy anyway. What, with a US sticker on it, would not fit a UK car?
  21. I agree. This is a very 'normal' set of data, i.e. before it is out, and then it is set up correctly. American Hamilton alignment machines have taken a lot of the guesswork out of setting up a car. The computer says 'what should this car be set to?'. It then finds out what it is set up as, and finally after adjustment, shows you in green that it is spot on. I can't see what more they can do but get it pretty well 'spot on'. It might be a very very slightly binding brake. A tyre swop around might also help.
  22. Just looked up Rockauto and as usual USA prices are amazing even with postage. Anyone successfully used them? Some parts say 'for USA cars' but I assume that spark plugs, wiper blades etc are common.
  23. However, in my experience, a good independent who is a 'spanner's man' not a 'fitter' is to be highly valued.
  24. Not sure about the cost but I am a great believer in changing gearbox and diff oil. It seems to have fallen out of favour in recent years. My old Mercedes W124 needed auto gearbox changes ever18k mikes and an oil change and filter change ever 36K miles. When I sold it at 147,000 miles the gearbox was silky smooth. The question is this, The gearbox costs to replace £5,000???. An oil change is peanuts in comparison. Why not change it? What will you loose?
