  1. Sorry I did 29 ft/lbs in the end, just a typo. Interesting this oil change went really well. If I had a 4 poster I could do it in 45 minutes as the 'oil filter flap' in the under tray is just two small screws. Problem is it opens 'away from you'. So. I opened up about 8-9 under tray nuts till the oil filter was exposed. Then a simple sin off- spin on. The total cost was £21. 71p. Yes really. It was Euro Car parts internet on a good weekend at 40% off. The oil is the very very best, i.e. Shell Engine Oil (Helix Ultra Professional AG Engine Oil - 5W-30 - 5ltr) plus a Mann oil filter (made in Germany - We all love that really). Unlike my previous oil change, I lifted the car, did the oil change and then, lowered it before starting the engine. All was well. Starting the engine 'in the air' = the air suspension drops to 4 inches above the floor. Very scary. Noticed the air cleaner is a tad dark so decided on a whole service package from: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Lexus-Service-Kit-LS430/172714797592?fits=Model%3ALS|Cars+Type%3A430&epid=2228869058&hash=item28369aaa18:g:8M8AAOSwcLxYCMIU So, say plus say £20+ for Shell oil, i.e. One can service a LS430 each year, (actually slightly over servicing + the bits) for £80. That seems good to me. Have not 'changed oil/serviced' etc, on a car for ages. The satisfaction of 'doing it properly' is wonderful.
  2. 2002 LS 430. Doing an oil change tomorrow. Anyone know the correct torque for the oil drain the sump nut? Thanks.
  3. I have used Pagid on several cars. On my LS 430 they are great. Plenty of feel, and bite. Silent too.
  4. Oh, 200 yards is nothing. It will be fine. I am talking a few miles past what it should do.
  5. I use Shell Helix but 100% synthetic. Cheap at Europarts with on line discount.
  6. I once asked a Toyota dealer if they had ever had a Prius battery go. Just one he said. A guy had run out of petrol and wanting to get to a garage drove on electric. OK as far as it goes, but the computer said the battery is getting low so I want to stop. The guy carried on and kippered the battery. These batteries last so long because the computer keeps the charge between about 15-85% of what the battery can do. Go very low and the battery structure is damaged. I bet the cat is also not happy.
  7. I suggested to my mechanic 'bedding them in' with some hard breaking, but he said no, that will glaze them, so I gently bedded them over about 100 miles. Good advise as they have a great feel and bite.
  8. Had Mintex on a Hillman Imp and a Polo in the 1970s. They were great. Had my LS430 all changed with Pagid from EuroCarParts. They were cheap, top performance, lots of grip and 'feel'. Perfect. The young mechanic that fitted them said they were the easiest pads he had ever fitted!
  9. Given that 'ordinary' brake flexible pipes will last 15-20 years or more, why not stick with that? https://www.eurocarparts.com/brake-hose-and-brake-pipe £25-30, job done. It is a luxury cruiser. We waft, we do not drive. That is why we buy it. If you want to spend money on enhancements.......change the oil every 5,000 miles.
  10. That is so useful. Many thanks, Have you actually fitted it to your satisfaction?.
  11. Does anyone have an idiots guide of how to do this. I could do with one.
  12. This seems to be the perfect solution. Has anyone fitted the version that does not rely on an iplayer or ipod. I want digital radio and a usb connector to play downloaded radio programmes. Also, the thought of 'getting to the back of the radio' fills me with dread as surely something will snap or blow.
  13. That is correct. My old Prius would always start in winter, but often not in summer. In winter you need heat and demister which = hot engine. So the computer starts it.
  14. I've have used these with some success. Good service etc. Good choice of tyres too. https://www.f1autocentres.co.uk/car-tyres/buy-tyres-online
  15. H tyres at 130mph is surely more than enough for all UK cars. In fact, I suspect these probably have a safety margin that lets them do maybe 160mph. The only problem might be insurance. The cars tyres have a specification 'from the factory'. This is not it, it is inferior. A really picky insurance company might pick up on that.
  16. Was washing my 430 last week and checking the engine. Decided to WD40 the locking mechanism and the engine bonnet latch. These are purely mechanical and better for it! It is a pull, that releases the bonnet contact. One then manually releases the 'hook' which is the second line of defence. If ever you have seen an engine bonnet go up, it truly is scary, as the forward wind gets under the bonnet and 'rips' it up in the air and usually smashes into the windscreen. My friend had a Renault that was jammed solid and not just sticky. The problem is the gubbings are in the very front where wind (dries it out), salt (corrosion) and muck all contribute to making it stick. The solution is a good wipe around with white spirt cleaning everything. Then grease all the hole mechanism and WD40 all round, including the bonnet hook spring, and shooting it up the cable, maybe a few times. Jiggle the lot and reapply. If it locks up, then getting the bonnet open could be a nightmare. A grease up/WD40 ever 4-6 months should be fine.
  17. The best I have got is 31, but that was travelling at about 64mph. Slow down = more MPG. That is true for any car.
  18. My handbrake went 'down' quite a bit'. Asked my local Formula 1 Autocentre chain 'clean it off and set it up'. They took the disc/drum off, cleaned it all up, and re-set it'. The effect was great, Good bite, and about 4-5 clicks to a lock-up. Cost about £30-35.
  19. A Lexus should always be the car that passes and folk say ..... what was that whisper. Why else would one drive one? It is called class and subtle elegance.
  20. Had mine done on a Prius at Toyota. £9.50p! Or 4 for £1 at a £1 shop. Bought my LS430 18 months ago. Batteries from the £1 shop still performing perfectly. These are a homogeneous product. All made in China for pence.
  21. I feel we are about 6-7 years away from a break-through. That will be 300 miles range and a £20kish price for a Focus tyre car. Then, 3 years later I will buy one for £9K
  22. I would buy one tomorrow, BUT, £75,000 buys a lot of petrol, and look at a Nissan Leaf.....£25k ish new.....£7-8k after 3 years = a lot of petrol.
  23. I always have found a good independent auto-electrician to be way better than any main dealer technician. They diagnose, (they know about electricity!) and then fix, rather than replace everything. A good one might charge £20 to tell you what is wrong. Money well spent I think. They do get it right!
