Hello and welcome to the LOC.

I think the pipe you are referring to is the one on the expansion tank to the left of the filler cap, the pipe is an overflow.

Possible causes of coolant loss from the pipe are a faulty filler cap or more seriously over pressurisation of the cooling system as a result of cylinder head gasket failure or water pump failure.

Most MOT garages should be able to check for exhaust gases in the coolant reservoir or do a cylinder compression check.

How much coolant are you loosing and what is your temperature gauge saying during normal driving conditions I.e. is the engine overheating on the gauge or the heater only blowing cold air?

Plus are there any other issues like rough running, misfiring or steam from the exhaust when the engine is warmed up fully?

Hi, as Steve mentioned, it may be your water pump, which is a common problem with Toyota/Lexus.

Coolant being sprayed on the engine bay, which is what I initially spotted on my car, turned out to be the water pump leaking.

Hi Lee and welcome to the LOC. We are a friendly bunch so please don’t hold back asking questions big or small should you have any problems with your car. We always welcome ideas on how to overcome problems with our cars but as they are the finest cars in the universe they don’t go wrong that often.

We always love to see pictures of your cars inside and out so don't be shy.

Happy Lexus Motoring.
