Bulb Kit for Travel in France

Featured Replies

I will be travelling in France in the near future. I see that I should have spare bulbs or be fined for any failure.

Which bulbs can be changed by the roadside, and what tools are required please?

I think they are all LED so would be difficult to change at the road side just take a generic kit in a plastic case.

Yep, can't say for certain as I don't have a LBX but my 2018 RX lights are LED all round. The days of carrying spare lamps and changing them at the roadside are long-since gone.

You also don't need 'beam-benders' for the headlamps as the LEDs project a flat beam and don't kick up at the side.

times past when EU travelling I've just had a generic kit as mentioned above and hopes never need to change a bulb ......... if ever one gets checked for this at the Border simply having " a kit " would hopefully satisy those Customs Inspectors

I have bought several bulb kits in the past for French travel. Never used any of them and they sit in my garage forlornly.

There is not now a legal requirement to carry spare bulbs, but read the link I'll add from Chat gpt.

Unless you are unfortunate enough to suffer a bulb failure, you're not likely to be stopped by police and as the link states, most bulbs are led and likely very hard to change yourself.

To cover yourself, take a list of Lexus dealers that are on your route and near to where you're staying and in the unlikely event of bulb failure and police stoppage, explain to the nice officers that changing bulbs yourself is nigh on impossible and it's your intention to head straight to the nearest dealer on your list to have them do it for you.

Unless you're speeding or doing something overtly stupid, you're unlikely to get stopped over there. Unless you happen to come across a complete jobsworth, the French police don't want the hassle of dealing with a foreigner and filling out paperwork.

Read this and what the others have already said. Spare Bulb Kit France

Hello, I'm French and I've been driving in France for 35 years and the police have never asked me to show a box of light bulbs. My daughter even tells me it's no longer mandatory.

Back in 1974 when I was beginning my 4-year electrical apprenticeship there was one thing guaranteed to drive the lecturers at college apoplectic, so I've never forgotten this little snippet of wisdom:

"bulbs grow, lamps glow" 🤣

In case you hadn't picked this up already you'll also need an emissions sticker for many cities in France, which is available online from the French government site. It's only a few euros and takes about a week or so to arrive.

Thank you so much. I had forgotten that.

Do you still have to take breathalyzer test kits?

And you still need to have a hi-vis jacket for each person in the car.

We have travelled some 50,000 miles through France and other countries in our E-Type over the last 25 years and have never been stopped once. Never carried breathalyzers, never fitted beam deflectors (too difficult to remove the headlamp cowls), have some bulbs somewhere in the boot but would take me ages to find them, never fitted a GB sticker ("it is a world renown British car for heavens sake") and despite frequently breaking the speed limits on the autoroute's and back roads never received a ticket.

Don't speed in towns, obey stop signs in villages and don't fret about their arcane laws which they are not going to enforce unless you decide to be stroppy if stopped. Do take hi-vis tabards and a red triangle for your own safety.

Even a second hand pair of LBX headlamp assemblies will cost you £1,000+ and need a specialist to fit. Ditto rear lights so cheaper to pay the 84 euro fine!

For those of a certain age - yellow headlights were compulsory in France.
