Anyone Bought A Lexus On E-bay?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Ive been unsucessfully searching for a LS400 for almost a year. For the money I want to spend, a 91-93 model is probably going to be around the mark. There is usually very little if any to choose from in N. Ireland so I have resigned myself to taking a flight followed by a ferry trip home.

Ive been looking at e-bay over the last couple of months and the occasional car looks promising, I just cant yet bring myself to click BID on a car I havent seen or driven.

Has anyone on the forum had any car buying e-bay experiences or any suggestions for getting my hands on a worthy LS400

Thanks

Declan

Welcome to the club

I haven't bought a lexus off eBay but i'm selling mine. i appreciate what your say how on earth can you buy something without having a good look over. i suggest you read the advert very clarefully. some sellers invite you to call and arrange a viewing before you commit to a bid. you can also ask the seller questions via eBay just in case you don't feel the seller has covered in in their brief.

happy Bidding

I certainly wouldn't recommend buying a car from eBay without seeing and driving it, especiallly a car about 14 years old. Only alternative is if there is somebody over here ( maybe in the club ) who lives near the car and could look for you ........ otherwise you may have to risk a couple of cheap flights over here to look just before auction close and bid .......

He who dares wins

That Lex on the Isle of Wight looks great, but you'll only know if you check it out in the flesh.

So, if it comes to a trip, look on it as an adventure, with the bonus of possibly aquiring a great car

The only thing that's for certain is if you do nothing you garauntee failure.

One last point. It's on the Isle of White and lots of buyers will be put off by this, so it might come in cheaper than a LS400 from somewhere better connected.

Best of luck with your search

Thanks for the replies folks,

The lexus in the isle of wight looks, good however the seller has no feedback which leaves it a little risky.

I honestly didnt even consider e-bay until recently. There hasnt been any LS400's in autotrader or the local dealers in N. Ireland for some time so i decided to have a look.

There seems to be a few e-bay sellers who specialise in high spec cars and the ones Ive seen have good feedback from their customers. In some ways this should make it less risky than buying from an independent dealer. Unfortunately some of them seem to go for way over their market value.

Heres a recent one

LEXUS LS400, 91/J, EXCELLENT SERVICE HISTORY, AIR CON

It looks like a really nice car but tell me if I am wrong, the price seemed a little much for a 91 no matter how nice and well looked after. I just missed one in as good a condition last September which went for £2000

This brings me to the next question... I remember there used to be a parkers guide for older cars which doesent seem to exist now. Does anyone know of a replacement or even better, a fair way to value the older LS400's

Thanks again

I bought my car form eBay ....... from a very new seller too.

I saw the car, well 'd3fy' saw the car ....... and told me.

On the ad at the time, was a mobile contact number, I rang them .... it was a couple, very nice - genuine and honest (suprise suprise) ...... went and had a look at the car a day later, drove it etc.

We made a deal there and then, and just agreed to "pay via other" on paypal, so that the seller would get good feedback.

I was then given the key, and log book was completed in front of me (HPi checkes etc had been done) then we both drove to the bank together, and I did a BACS transfer of the funds into the seller's account.

But you must beware, that buying cars and like for like expensive items from eBay can be a little tricky.

I bought my first Lexus (a 94 LS400) off e-bay in December.

It didn't need any work, just some TLC really. It looks and drives fantastic now.

I paid cash but only after i'd seen the car and checked it was "as advertised".

I know e-bay seems a dodgy place to buy a car but as long as you don't part with any money before you collect it you can always walk away if it's a nail. Some sellers want 20% after the auction but what if it's a shed when you get there? Or not there at all?

The advice I received on this site helped me find a good MK2 LS as I was in a similar position to you. Good luck Declan.

Once mines back on the road I want to sell it and it seems similar to what you are looking for, including location. I think I have to be a gold member of this site though to give you any more info and I don't know how to do that and what it entails. Can anyone advise?

Seems Mr Larkin would have to be a gold member also in order for me to talk direct? Also seems that having just written all about the work I'm doing on the car at the moment that I should've joined last week if I was going to join at all!!

I can do that even if he's not a paid up member? I followed the hyperlink and that stated that one of the perks of being gold member is access to other gold members e-mail addresses. Is it not limited to them?

Thanks for the advice,
