It always shocks me how bad our transport infrastructure is compared to other countries. I spent 3 months living in Singapore and it was so easy to get around, public transport was cheap, clean and reliable,traffic was never a problem - car ownership costs are a bit steep though! The UK has bad roads, too much traffic, dirty, smelly, expensive, unsafe and unreliable public transport and the government does not have a clue on how to fix the problems.

Isn't Singapore a bit draconian on the car ownership rules. I remember reading that you have to prove that you have an off-road parking space, and that the car taxes are so high that it becomes fairly cheap relatively to have a flash motor.

I also have lived and worked in Singapore and it's true to say that the traffic is better for the simple reason that the cost of owning and running a car is rediculous. For a basic small type car you are looking at about 60K with taxes etc etc. I once got a lift back fron Changi airport in..... a Lexus LS something - the guy said it cost him 200K !!!! - don't know if that was true or not but sounded impressive.

The MRT system is excellent. Used it all the time, and when we didn't use that we got taxis because there are so many of them !- although the taxi drivers pick and choose who they pick up !!!

Still prefer to live here though
