Hd Tv

Thirdly, in this country, there is currently no medium for the general public to play HD even if their display device is 'HD ready. DVD is NOT HD and never will be (I know that's a simplistic view but what I mean is.. in it's current guise). Blu Ray (when and if it arrives over here) will give you that capability but are people willing to scrap their current film collection and go out and buy the lot again on a different format for the increase in picture quality? The general public won't bother!! There will always be a few A/V enthusiasts (myself included  :winky: ) who will wan't the most up to date gear with THX certified amps and and a dedicated room to watch films in. But that won't account for the majority of A/V equipment sold in this country and so the manufacturers (and the Studios) will have to be very careful where and how they pitch HD over here.

People won't have to scrap their existing movie collections on DVD as the BlueRayRecorders will be capable of handling DVDs.

And as you say - A/V enthusiasts will buy BlueRay and the Movie makers will start to release the bigger Films on this media, then more will buy BlueRay players because they see these 'special' disc at Blockbuster and curiousity will set in. It was tha same story with the introduction of DVDs.

Hi Mark,

No I know that Blu Ray and HD DVD will be backward compatible but if people want that HD kick in picture quality then they will have to buy their film collection all over again in that format.

Aido,

This all makes me very nervous !! :crybaby: It smacks of Big Brother (again !) and for the manufacturers/studios to have that much of a stranglehold is worrying VERY worrying. Of course your viewing habits will be collated at the other end and then you will be bombared with e-mail trying sell you similar material... (Looks like I will just get e-mails trying to sell me porn then !!:lol: )

Cheers guys

Sonys answer to the next wave in video entertainment. Basically a higher capacity disk that looks like a dvd, but holds more data. The same with HD-DVD. There is more to it, but it would send even the guy in the sky to sleep.

As el_gencer says..

It's the next generation discs that are capabable of storing huge amounts of data (currently 54gb on a dual layer and up to 200gb for future discs) so that means you can get circa 25 films on one disc in standard MPEG2 DVD quality !!

The real reason for Blu Ray though is the ability to store High Definition (HD) video on it !! :D

Fantastic :D

Guys, if any of you want to have a read of what the HD-DVD / BluRay stuff is all about then have a look on www.dvdfile.com - they have been writing up and following the situation very closely since their conception and are very knowledgable about all the new formats :D

These new formats are going to make standard 480P / 576P DVDs look like LaserDisc in comparison!

Hey i like my laserdisc. i even have a player that uses a form of records to store films on it. ced player i believe.

I think a lot of plasma owners are going to be upset with hdtv, as quite a few only go up to 1024x768 and dont have dvi or hdcp in. i'm currently messing around with converters and am looking at another one thats made in germany that converts the signal to vga. need to get some pennies first though. when i get it i'll post the results. this hdtv stuff aint as straight cut as it should be.

I think a lot of plasma owners are going to be upset with hdtv, as quite a few only go up to 1024x768 .

Panasonic already have a vertical resolution 1080 progressive scan 65" Plasma out !! Other manufacturers will follow suit. LCD still has too many problems with response and lag times as well as the actual way the light is emitted from the screen to give studio quality HD so that will have to change before it wrestles the crown away from Plasma.

I agree with your comments - The 'average consumer' is not going to have a clue about HD and will be guided  ...sorry I mean MISguided by the sales bods in the likes of Curry's, Comets etc and will end up with something that isn't true HD. I can envisage a lot of unhappy faces out there

I have been speaking to Panasonic (both here and Japan) and at time of typing they do not have a date when these panels will be available over here. They are expected to hit the US by the end of the year so should make the UK by 2013 then :D :D :D

Organic LED displays are the future.

Once TV's start to come out with this technology, I'd imagine they will be built as true HD TV since they will be starting from scratch.

I seen some at the IFA 2005 show this year and they are very impressive.

But more importantly they are cheaper to manufacture than Plasma.

WTF are organic displays?  :duh:

They're .....ALIVE :P .. Naaahhh not really. Very simplistically they use polymers instead of the usual semiconductors. They have all of the advantages of other displays (and other advantages) and none of the drawbacks... except one.. Their Lifespan.

current technology has them at about 10,000 hrs which is not really sufficient for mainstream TV/Display production. They are around already in things like mobile phone displays, car audio displays etc, but none of the current applications work the dispaly 'hard' like watching hours of video footage would on a TV !! (Phone displays go off after a few seconds, car audio is only on whilst you're in your car etc.

Cheers
