Is200 - Clunky Gearbox

Recommended Posts

I purchased an IS200 just over 2 weeks ago. It's my first Lexus and is a great car, but when I change from 1st to 2nd gear the gearbox makes a terrible clunking sound. It also does it slightly when going from 2nd to 3rd although it is nowhere near as noticable.

At first I thought it was me getting used to the clutch but it doesn't happen in any other gear. It doesn't happen when changing down either - only up???!!!???

Someone has told me that this is a common problem with the IS200 and that people just put up with it, but I can't believe that a 20 grand plus motor should have problems like this.

Does anyone have any experience of this gearbox clunk in their own IS and is it something I should be worrying about? At the moment I am seriously considering asking the dealer for my money back but I wanted to get people's opinions on here first.

The car is less than 3 years old but I bought it from a non-Lexus dealer. If there are problems then does anyone know where I stand with the warranty? Will Lexus still honour the 3 year warranty if the vehicle has changed hands in this way?

Normal, but can be worse in some cars than others, if the car has full service history lexus or vat reg garage, lexus parts used, less than 60,000 miles then your warranty is ok :D

perfectly normal ie: the gearbox design is crap. if you make slower changes then it is ok.

I had my gearbox replaced because of this - 10K later it was the same, some people say the B+M short shifter cures the prob - I am not convinced I have a short shifter now and i am positive the rougher action of the short shifter just masks the rough change into second

The TRD one makes it bit better, than the B&M one :winky:

Ah I'm glad someone asked this. The clunky gear change was beginning to worry me. But it seems all is normal. I'll still have my car checked out just in case!

i would describe mine as a precise action, kinda like rifle-bolt, but not clunky, worn syncro rings display symptoms of a clunky change esp in lower gears, there are specialist gearbox fluids than can help with worn syncromesh, i'll try to find the link.
