TOKYO April 12, 2006; Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corp. said on Wednesday it is recalling 11,000 Lexus cars in Japan and 46,000 overseas to fix a faulty seat belt part.

Toyota will replace seat belts in both front seats, which can become jammed inside the holding due to a faulty part, it said.

No accidents have been reported due to the defect, it said.

Summary:

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE AIR BAG inflator, WHICH IS USED IN THE SIDE AIR BAG, THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG, AND THE KNEE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY, SOME INFLATORS WERE PRODUCED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF THE HEATING AGENTS NECESSARY FOR PROPER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.

Consequence:

THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

From the sounds of it it's only IS model's that have been built in the US that are affected, UK Lexus to my knowledge are built in Japan so parts suppliers will be different.

Toyota to recall 57,000 Lexus cars globally

TOKYO (Dow Jones/AP) _ Toyota Motor Corp. said -- TOKYO (Dow Jones/AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that it will recall about 57,000 vehicles from its upscale Lexus brand globally, due to faulty parts in the device that winds seat belts.

The recall affects the Lexus GS and IS models sold in North America, Japan, Europe and other markets. Passengers may not be able to buckle up due to the faulty parts. Those vehicles were produced between July and December last year.

Of the 57,000 vehicles, about 29,000 vehicles will be recalled in North America, 11,000 in Japan, 10,000 in Europe, and the remainder in other markets.
