How To Know If If You Have A Sportmodel Or Se?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I just bought a 2001 IS200, and got to say that I am more than pleased with the car. The handling is exellent and the intrior is one of the best I've seen. But the question is how you can tell the diffrence between the sport and the SE model? At the doorstep there is stainless steal insertions but the pedals are not. The suspension is harder than in other cars, no doubt about that. And the type of steeringwheel is a sporty one too. It could be that the previous owner, bought these things extra to the se model but im not sure because it feels so sporty driving. I had an 2000 Subaru Impreza GT before this one and got to say that the handling of this car is equally good. So is there a way to tell what model of the IS200 I have?

BR Christoffer

PS. Is the IS200 possible to chip to get some extra power?

Hi and welcome to the club mate, the sport model has a few subtle differences. You have slightly tinted rear windows with the word sport etched in them, also you have metal pedals and door sills, a slightly lower suspension and the car comes with a rear spoiler. Sport models also benefit from a two tone leather steering wheel and are not available as an automatic. Hope this helps, if you post some pics we will be able to tell straight away if it is a sport or se. With regards to the chip, i'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you about it.

Just noticed, your in sweden, not sure whether your models are the same as in the U.K or not.

Thank you all for the quick replys!

Then I guess (hope) im lucky enough to have a sports model, the rear windows are slighly tainted, and the steeringwheel is in two different colours or tones. And it has a six gear, manual gearbox. The only thing it that doesnt fit to your descriptions are the pedals that are made from black rubber. That is why im still a little confused.

I will post a picture of it soon, so someone of you could tell me for sure.

BR Christoffer

PS. I love this car, the best ever!! :)

I would say that it is not a Sport for 2 reasons:

1/ It looks too high (which is not conclusive)

2/ Why would anyone want to change the sport pedals to rubber ones?

If you get the chassis number and post it up I am sure that someone could get you a positive ID from that.

Hi!

Well, it is up on the sidewalk on one side there so it might look a little high on the picture, but its not really. Lower than most other cars (in sweden that is). And what about the the steeringwheel, it sure is in two shades, and the stainless steal insertions on the doorstep (or what that piece of the car is called in english?? :) ). There could be some diffrences between the UK and Swedish models too, i don't know? I have been pushing it quite hard in a few roundabouts with the traction control turned off and it feels like it has a differential slip controller due to the nice powerslides :) But that will be revealed when the snow comes back.. I know i just sold the best winter car ever (Impreza GT) but anyway i think this one will be fun too. Frontwheel drive is not for me even though i learned to left brake with the impreza. Why someone would change the pedals to rubber ones is that if you have snow under your shoes, you might slip on the rubber pedals, but that is just a guess?

Either way, i love the car! Nice one to drive! :) :) :)

Try to make a burnout - if only one wheel is spinning it does not have the Limited Slip Differential :P

No LSD = No Sport ;)

Good Morning everyone!!

I've got to tell you that I tried the LSD yesterday, in a parking garage with blank cement foundation on the pavement. And Yes my friends, it does spin with both wheels

What a happy day, you made me quite worried for a while there :)

Thanks for your comments all!

See you!

I found this link/pic on the web.. So strange, what kind of model is this then??? http://lexus.ggl.lu/images/sujet/is200%20300%20intérieur.jpg

Metal pedals, but automatic gearbox and a all black steeringwheel. Can't be a sport model if you have automatic, right? :) It seems to me that Lexus has all kinds of diffrences depending on where you bought your car. Have a nice afternoon everybody, me and my (superb) IS200 are going for a ride in the sun in a bit :) See you soon!

Looks just like my 300SC, except for the all black steering wheel.
