New To Diesel Question

It's still a valid question though - the fact you've never needed to top it up yet doesn't mean you won't ever need to. New engines often burn more than well run-in ones too.

To answer the original question - I don't know off-hand, but the handbook will tell you what grade to buy; any of the correct grade from one of the major oil manufacturers (Shell Helix, Castrol, Duckhams etc) would be best.

It's always a good idea to keep an eye on the level, and keeping a 1 litre bottle of something suitable in the boot isn't a bad idea either.

It is worth keeping some, mine needed topping up at 7k miles and at its 10k service last week they noticed an oil leak from the top of the engine which now means it's got to go in for three days at the end of the month - worth keeping an eye out for if you have a 220d.

'cos of the way it runs, extra compression etc, it is normalish on most diesels. Newer common rail ones are less 'oily'.

My old A4 had a thirst...a lot of oil in the first 10,000 miles, then settled to about 1 litre every 10,000 till 30,000 and then half a litre - which apparently was normal. That was the 130bhp TDi 1.9. The new 2.0 litre is as bad...
