Dismantle My Dash

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 IS200 which about 2 weeks ago developed a small rattle from the dashboard which is driving me insane.

Its nothing to do with the heater fan because even when its switched off the rattle/vibration is sometimes there. The car did have a phone kit fitted by previous owner so it might be that.

What I am trying to find out is how I take the centre of my dash apart. It does not have Sat Nav. I am scared to crack something or damage it. If someone could tell me how to locate the screws or clips so that I can take apart the middle of the dash then that would be appreciated.

Its done 50k, recently refurbished alloys and due to a nerd taking a key to it 6 months ago its also had a full respray (graphite grey) so its fair to say its in great nick - but the rattle is driving me to despair and unless sorted it has to go!

thats an easy one. pull the top of the dash (the bit with the heater vents in) quite firmly. it will come out, only clips holding it in.

then pull the bottom piece with the heated seat buttons in. that will also come out with a tug. then ur left with 4 10mm bolts to undo. hey presto.

had to do it last night to fit my autoleads fascia adapter back together.

Depending what year... The lint tray might lift off (couple of clips).. If not grab hold of the tray / air vents and pull towards you. The whole thing will come away.. From there you can see bolts, undo them..

On the bottom where the TRC / Snow buttons are, pull that towards you (couple of clips) this will come away and expose more bolts (bottom of stereo) undo..

When lifting it all out be very careful as the metal sides are very sharp and will scratch the rest of the interior. Put some tape or something on it to be safe :)

Iv noticed something similar- a small rattle that sounds like its coming from the window vent area, but its been there for so long, iv kinda got used to it!! :duh: Anyone know if its a common thing?.....might have to give the dash removal a try too- let us know if you figure out what it is.

Well guys I appreciate your help and gave it a go but unfortunately did not succeed. Following your instructions it was easy to dismantle the centre dash but once that was done (and the problem not solved) I realised that the noise was coming from further over. Closer to the passenger airbag area.

I assume thats a much harder bit to go in and have a look?

Again any help would be great.

Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

AJ: sorted_vti suggested the same thing as i did. When you get a weekend free, give it a go. I've not encountered the little rattle you guys speak of, but then eh, i don't really have a dash.

what you doing to your car Niraj, weight saving

on a more serious note, i had a rattle coming and thought it was coming from behind the dash, but it turned out to be a screw that had come loose and was moving around inside the front centre reading light, check that first.

Think that's a bit extreme to find a rattle

nothing is ever too extreme... a rattle is a rattle! i'm sure you've heard the new IS owners moan about it for long enough, lol.
