I have always used Autosol chrome cleaner. If the tar is a bit difficult to come off, apply the Autosol with fine wire wool then buff up to a nice shine.

Like Tango says Autosol is the muts.

I cleaned mine with one of those plastic scourer things and hot soapy water to get the road grime off. Dry and polish up with Autosol, job done :D

Autosol or Brasso BUT NEVER use wire wool! No matter how fine it is still an abrasive and will cut into the chrome. Like MAC says use a nylon scourer to get the real grime off using plenty of hot soapy water then dry and apply autosol or brasso.

My tailpipes are type 304 stainless steel.....anyway with 00 grade wire wool you're going to have to rub a bloody long time to remove decent chrome, especially cutting it with autosol.
