Coolant

OK! so the car is coming along fine now! Im just waiting for a brake caliper to come, then get it fitted!. When I got the car serviced and cam-belt changed last week, I was advised that the rear off-side brake calipers casing? or was it casting? had a bit of a bodged up fit done to it! .so Im getting another one fitted. He ( the mechanic that is!) also said there was no antifreeze in it. (I cant understand the previous owner? I mean its a new radiator, probably cost about a ton! then they didnt put any coolant in!!!!!!)

Anyway, I digress! I need some coolant , but, how much? and red coolant I suppose? It says in the manual to use Toyota long life coolant? If so where do you guys usually get it from? (obviously from Toyota! but is there a better/cheaper! source to purchase online! Cheers in advance guys!

the Toyota stuff isn't expensive, and was designed for Toyota engines

Just wondering because I'll get my car serviced by non Lexus garage next week and probably they'll just put some cheap stuff in it. I guess it's better if I bring my own coolant.

Toyota coolant is red... and lasts around 5 years..

The Toyota longlife coolant is pink, and lasts around 10 years..

The pink stuff is £66 for 10 litres.. I know, I bought it..

don't know how you can call it cheap though !

John

the red is about £15 for 5 litres !

Yep.. about half the price, and lasts half as long..

Swings and roundabouts... but I won't have to change it in 5 years..

John

dont count your chickens before they hatch lol ten years is along time to not change coolant, anything could happen like burst hose or a leak. touch wood you dont have any probs like that.

Good point... lets say 7 years on, burst pipe, lose all the coolant.... waste of money..

however, it is very rare to lose ALL the coolant in one go.. you should be checking your coolant level regularly, and should be able to spot a leak, and have it repaired without losing it all..

but yes, still a good point..

All you need to know is you should only use Red or Pink coolant, as it doesn't mix with green or other types.
