Key Fob Questions....

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Apologies if there is already a million and one threads about this topic….I couldn’t find what I needed to know.

My key fob wouldn’t lock my car this morning, which is odd as it unlocked it when I got into it…..Ill put this down to a flat fob Battery which isn’t a major concern but…...

Question 1) Can I just get a Battery, remove the tiny screw, replace and it’ll work?

Question 2) Will opening the car using the key into the door set the alarm off?

Question 3) Will my engine start if my fob Battery is dead?

Question 4) Can I buy one of those blank keys off of eBay and code it myself or do they need to be coded by Lexus? I have the original 3 button fob key, but no spares and want one just incase….

Help and advice gratefully appreciated 

Bill

The IS200 keys use a CR1616 battery- get one from eBay, local motor factors etc. You don't need to to Lexus.

Use the search function to find the guide on how reprogram the fob/key.

You cannot just buy a key off eBay and reprogramme it. The keys off eBay are just the empty fob with the steel part of the key on it. This will have to be cut on a specialist machine not usually found in a high street cobbler but in a locksmith shop at a cost of around £15. You say that you have only got one key, where are you going to get the electronic thingy to fit into the fob of the spare key? I would think that Lexus are the only people that could supply this item and probably quite expensive.

Any suggestions with my prob below:

Opened my car yesterday morning no problem...drove to station parked up and my key wouldnt lock my car? So I waited for it to lock itself on the timer thing and left it went off to work.

Came back last night and the key opened the car first time drove home no probs....got home, car wouldnt lock again.

This morning same thing has happened.

When i press to lock the car the little red light on the fob shows which would suggest the Battery is not low...what else could be preventing the car from locking? Is it possible that the Battery is only slightly low, ie it has enough power to light the LED but not to send a signal to lock the car???

Near/around your house are there any wireless transmitters that could be affecting the locking/unlocking of your car?

Things like your/your neigbours wireless door bell could be interfering with the cars remote locking?

As a start, get the Battery changed then see what happens.

I had a similar problem on my 1st Lexus & had to have a new actuator fitted ?

If u can drop on a 3 button used key on e-bay u can always put the brain into a new shell & re programme it

Iv done this in the past iv paid £5 for a shell & £10 for the blade cutting

& reprogrammed quite a few now so just keep looking

But if its a prob with the button, wont i need a new shell and transmitter part?

I was gonna do that to get a spare key anyways.

I park my car on a private estate full of flates etc so its possible that someones wireless is interfering....one thing I haven't tested is locking the car in a different location...

Ill try that before i swap the Battery tonight....then obv swap the Battery anyway.

Actuator? Is that the solenoid in the door? I thought that.....but then why would it unlock but not lock?

the only time they auto lock is when its already locked, you unlock the car but do not open the door, then it will relock.

My pal has a 200 sport on a T plate, had it from new his auto locks and folds in the mirrors. Always has done hes never had anything fitting he gets out shuts the door walks away it locks itself and fold mirrors in !!!!. i was wondering if its possible to get my s model to do it.

well he had better tell toyota about it as its the only one that must do it....

they never had auto folding mirrors, manual operated folding mirrors yes but not automatic.

so after closing the door how long does it take to auto lock??
