Hello, I know that they are all good, but which model ls 400, Mark 1-5 do the members consider the best....Thanks Roy.

I'd say the mkIV engine and interior wise but def. the mkIII for exterior looks :)

Mark 5 ?

A very rare model , only 1 was produced it had a special hyper warp button, unfortunately a tester pressed it & it went where no man has gone before , it never came back, some Idiot also left the plans in the boot & was later found dead ( it seemed he slipped & fell on a random sword)

Well, that's great shame, but the new Brabus-tuned Merc S Class has 740bhp. That should do the trick.

Or at least for ten mins untill it breaks down with terminal merc electrics ( I used to like my old mercs, shame it all went so badly wrong from 95 on)

I'd say a mkIV is the best overall. Speaking of mercs, does anybody notice on the new ones, when a driver puts their foot on the brake pedals with the headlights switched on, the front foglights (or one of them) come on as well.... Whatever happened to the legendary Mercedes quality? If their new cars are having electrical problems already... Thank Goodness for Lexus!! :whistling:

What happened with Merc & BMW was they had to start building their cars down to a price, mainly due to the LS 400 being almost half the price of their equivelent models, Where as previously merc was run by engineers,so no comprimise on quality, the accountants took over in the mid 90 s body panels were then made in South Africa & not enough galv was used on poor quallity steel , gear boxes made in India , god knows where the electrical components came from I would imagine China or maybe Amstrad in Barking. I used to live & work in Germany, in the motor trade along with a BMW specialist workshop or should I say BM troubleyou, the amount of nearly new cars going through that workshop with very expensive problems was untrue. I dont know wether to feel guilty or smug wafting around in my LS in the knowlage that it is probably the cause of the decline in Merc & BMWs quality , A bloke I work with has a 1997 e38 740i bmw with 105 k on it, He hates my LS, I think mainly due to the fact that at least once a month he has to spend a weekend crawling around under it fixing the next thing thats gone wrong.

Also don't forget the common Merc problem with corrosion of the front crossmember requiring substantial repairs

Ahh - I think I might be able to explain this one...some of the newer Mercs are coming with extra cornering lighting. At very low speed, the fog light on the side you are turning to switches on. Idea is to light up the bend/road so that you can see better as you go in that direction. I had it on a SLK and I must say - it was useless! Didn't really help much and I lost count of the number of times people and the Fuzz stopped me about it! In the end I had Merc turn the function off.

Ah well, I was bamboozled by that one! At least they should have tried to make the fog lights turn as you take a corner... but then again since it's a modern merc you'll end up with cross-eyed fog lights!!

Lol, love the Merc bashing going on here.......to be fair though we have an 05 CLS and it's actually been pretty reliable on Merc standards. It's only had two faults since new, one was a failure with the ESP (where it just didn't work but didn't affect the driving of the car) and the other was with the aforementioned cornering light system, both of which were replaced under warranty.

As above though, the cornering light thingy is very weird, when you turn the wheel the foglight on that side comes on. When you indicate, the foglight on that side comes on, and so on.

Weirdly enough it does kind of work, when you're on a twisty unlit country road, it does help with illuminating where you're going a bit, plus it also lights up the edge of the road (should anything be there)

As for turning foglights, the headlights themselves turn so no need for both to turn :P

Sorry for drifting off topic a bit, don't know a lot about the LS but actually think either the mk1 or 2 was my favourite looks wise.......

Cornering lights?????? or conning lights.................dont be a mug and get sold this nonsense technology.

Have you not noticed how Merc's lights seem to be the brightest in your face blue tint aswell!!!

Do these people not know that on a really dark road you can just turn the full beam on and you can see loads.

I know it gets a pain when you have to keep pushing/pulling a lever with your finger every few minutes if cars come the other way, but you can either slow down to 50mph so that the main beam lights enough for you to see (unless of course you have cars behind you...or you are nearly blind), or just get on with flicking the switch....whats up with the world today? wouldnt it be really boring if the car drove itself and did everything for you.

The only auto lights i want to see is the height adjustment. Everyone seems to leave the little dial on 5 nowadays which is really annoying when you know the oncoming car hasn't got its full beam on but you are still blinded cos they just roll the dial to the top setting........ :tsktsk: Just no need.......unless of course you're on the above mentioned UNLIT HILLY BENDY COUNRTY ROADS. If not roll it down to 0 or 1 where it should stay and keep your fellow road users sane.

And dont ever buy a Merc....

o yeah, and about the best looking......

It might be because i got one, but i do like the front of the Mk2, the back could do with a face-lift for sure, but i found the front of the later models got a bit frog like looking with those big headlights, maybe some influence from the toyota hierachy somewhere during design stage, you know, the guy who designed the Yaris :eerrrmm: or something...who knows?

But i cant argue about the interiors, mine is still top quality but is nowhere near the recent models...wow

Lol, I had a chrysler hire car in the US a few years ago that had an automatic high beam - depending on what was in front (approaching cars, street lights, etc) it would automatically turn the full beam on or off. Actually worked surprisingly well!

I think you've got it wrong there with headlight manual adjustment, 0 is the highest setting, all the other numbers make the beam drop (it's to compensate for weight in the rear, back goes down headlights point up so need to manually bring them down)

If they're too high, they're just not set correctly rather than the owner having the dial on the wrong setting.

lol,

its one of my pet hates.

I do adjust them every now & then but only on seriously dark bendy roads, they do help if the beam is a few inches higher but being the considerate bloke i am  , then i usually remember to put them back.

Maybe i should design a windscreen that counter acts this new halogen phenomenon.... :hocus-pokus: my god should i patent that? :yahoo:

I saw another Mercedes today (E-Class) with those winking foglights. The car was turning right into a side road so the right fog was on along with the indicator. It just looks odd and I don't think I could get used to it. I prefer the LED look on certain cars like the LS600H and the Audi RS6. I saw the RS6 today (672bhp twin turbo V10) and it looks fantastic inside and out. I'd have the LS6h for daily usage though as 30mpg from a big engine is not to be sniffed at!!

No, i was in a RX300 and it was definately 0 for its lowest setting.......not being picky mate, i just noticed it

The colour of some new lights are much better, but some are over the top bright. I don't know why some turn with the corner, you eyes can see just fine...

They'll come up with something else more productive soon im sure
