How Were Your Winter Tyres In Today's Snow?

Recommended Posts

Just been out in my winter tyres today for the first time in snow and they proformed brilliantly.

I was a bit unsure at first how they would drive but after driving the length of our street the difference from summer tyres was like night and day.

The best bits today were overtaking a BMW being pushed by two men after getting stuck at a T-junction and driving up a steep hill while the home owners were still out trying to clear the road in order for them to get out in their cars.

How did you fare today?

My sister in her e90 330D auto had no trouble negotiating a car park that was more akin to an ice rink on Saturday night. We haven't had snow, just sleet and freezing temps/wind that meant the sleet turned to sheet ice as soon as it landed.

She's on Avon Ice Touring ST in whatever 18" size BMW 3's usually wear. 225/55 18 iirc.

This is my first winter with the IS200 Sport, and I had already installed winter tyres on it about a month ago. So I have never tested the car in snow with summer tyres.

Anyways, the highlight for me was the ability to overtake a Ford Fiesta on an uphill road. I was rolling along behind the Fiesta, on a country road, and all was easy and well until we were ascending a hill. The Fiesta came to a gradual halt, with its front wheels just rotating freely in snow. And as I was running a little late for a date on Saturday evening, I promply indicated, shifted down a gear, and overtook :P

Here are pics of my car and the winter tyres in question:

I had Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D Performance Winter / Snow tyres fitted back in November on my original rims of a 2007 IS250 SE.

Totally stunned at the change in what the car can do compared to the not going anywhere with summer Dunlops on last winter. As per the photos above, the car was able to pull away with no drama or spinning on flat or inclines and it has also shown similar positive aspects when it has been very frosty.

Thanks.

I was looking at the same Vredestein tyres, nice to know they performed well. However, do you have 225/45/R17 all round or 245/45/R17 on the rears?

Hi, i have put 225/45/R17 on all round, the alloy wheels are the same size from front to back, its just the tyres that are bigger on the back.

I will switch back to the 245 wide summer tyres but i went for 225 winter tyres mainly due to the cost aspect of the smaller tyres and the fact that thinner tyres offer better traction in snow.

I have not noticed any difference in handling due to the slightly smaller back wheels.
