Ls430 Compressor Locked Up

Recommended Posts

Apparently my compressor is locked up in my ls430 04

The belt etc is turning and running etc.

Lexus Coventry and an indy air con place have confirmed both these diagnoses.

I have no intention of buying a brand new compressor for a grand!

I can get an OEM one or reman one for around £300.

A bit of research and my compressor is a denso 6SEU16C....

I can get a second hand one from eBay for some ££

Or even these

But it would be naive to think that all of these could fit my car :(

Don't know the best course of action.

Is the compressor seized or is it the clutch that has gone? Reason I ask is because you can just replace the clutch without degassing the sysytem and of course it is cheaper than the whole lump.

I believe the compressor inside has seized.

How do you tell if the clutch has gone exactly? The belt is still sprinning around etc.

This is what I've been told :

e internals of the compressor have 'locked' and are therefore stationary. Hence no refrigerant is being pumped around the system - therefore no cooling effect. The drive pulley continues to run because there is a 'shear pin' which breaks in the event the compressor seizes. If this didn't happen, the pulley would stop rotating and the drive belt would be thrown off. It's a 'fail safe' system. This was the diagnosis of both Lexus in Coventry and the specialists in Crewe (Autolock).

From what I understand is that the compressor has seized not the clutch. So the compressor needs replacing.

A strange twist of evens, I wanted to check the compressor was actually seized, so went to the fuse box.

There's no relay for the compressor! It's been pulled out.

However I still think the compressor is seized, Im not lucky enough or fortunate enough to be able to just plug in a relay, gas the system and have it all working.

I think the relay has been unplugged to stop the compressor doing anything whilst seized rather than unplugging to generate extra income for a garage.

I guess it could happen, mixed in with the gas is Pag Oil which is there to lubricate the seals and also the moving parts of the compressor.

If the system had been leaking and then left with no gas for some time it is possible that the compressor could seize due to a lack of lubrication plus air and therefore moisture entering would add to the problems.

also stops from LPressure in system and many othe factors but leaks is main cause due to lack of use

Shaft seal leaks is a good one as the rubber allows gas past from lack use

did they say seized as in solid or internal fault such as broken up inside compressor?

As system will be contaminated with the compressors component breakge issue this makes for a oily paste that is not good at all

Indeed with the contamination.

I bought it knackered, all I was told was it's locked/seized inside and they evacuated the gas.

What do I risk by putting the relay in and seeing if the compressor will move?

If the shear pin has gone there would be no need to pull the relay.

Where in Yorkshire are you?

Sheffield.

I'm not sure who pulled the relay out.

The Lexus dealer said compressor was seized and was also re confirmed by an AC specialist. ( this was all done by the previous owner )

I live in Sheffield and car ac was my trade I have all the gear if you want me to take a look

Well there we go! This forum is ace :D

Well I need to get a relay for that compressor from somewhere, shouldn't be hard and then you can take a look for me :)

yeah I spotted that bookend, if it needs a compressor then I will most likely bring one in from USA, amazon.com have the correct DENSO one for the 6 speed ls430! And its about $300 if I remember correectly.

Just looked up the AC relay for a 2004 LS430 and it says "Not Applicable" and no part number is provided. Should be an empty position 5 in the engine relay box.

So you may not have a missing relay after all, it may not have been fitted to start with.

Oh shizer! I have no clue what's going on !

Always thought there was some sort of fusey thing for a compressor! If the above is the case then I imagine the compressor is indeed knackered and I have a big job ahead of me getting new AC bits aswell as a compressor and doing a big flush.

big sigh!

Whoa hang on a minute you have already said that putting the power into the compessor direct starts it and produces cold air.The relay on the ls400 operates the magnetic clutch and if Steve is correct and there is no Relay then something else like a sensor or a pressure switch operates the Clutch. I have already suggested you download a workshop manual from the web and you will be able to determine from the troubleshooting programme which of the foregoing switches the A/C on.Stop panicing and deal with things in a orderly and logical manner.

You're not talking to me right?

I don't own an LS400.

I have never experienced cold air since I got it 4 months ago.

We haven't fully resolved the relay side of things.

We havn't even had the compressor off.

Infact nothing has happened yet, it's merely a planning stage at the moment with the wonderful help of bookend.

Please calm down!

I plan to hook up techstream when I get back home, see if there is any AC diagnostic option as I have barely really played with it since I got it.

Will let you guys know!

Easy done, I also lost track with two similar threads. Interesting reading none the less. I love this forum for the knowledge out there and great tips on useful reading elsewhere on the net.

430 has a relay for the compressor.

What we need to differentiate between is the pre facelift and the facelift.

As far as I know they have 2 completely different compressors..

So is it a case the pre came with a relay and face didn't etc.

And this is what books looks like 9 (preface):

I've dropped a PM to a couple of you people that have facelifts to perhaps drop buy with some clarifiaction on whether you have a relay in that location or not !

Thanks !
