Vsv Faulty On My Ls430

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I hope someone can help me. I have a 2001 Lexus ls430. The EML came on last week. I took it to lexus main dealers and they diagnosed it as a faulty vacuum switching valve. The part costs £62, but the labour cost is just over £600. The car drives fine without any problems, but i want this thing sorted out. Is this a common fault on the ls430 and is it a very hard job to do??

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the LOC.

The part as you know is fairly cheap for a Lexus, the problem is the amount of time to actually get to it and replace the valve.

There is a lot of stuff to remove and refit hence the labour cost at Lexus prices.

It may be a better option to find a decent independant garage with Lexus/Toyota experience as their labour rates will be a lot lower.

Yet another "emissions" and "Fuel Efficiency" related component failing, I think the cost of replacement would outweigh the "fuel savings" over the lifetime of the car!

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I suppose your right, the best thing i should do is look for a lexus specialist. But im i suppose to notice any change in the way the car drives? Because i havent noticed anything different.

Thanks

The device is an add on to the IACV and is only there to alledgedly improve fuel efficiency, what the exact improvement is I don't know but if you haven't noticed any significant increase in fuel consumption I would think it makes little difference.

This is yet another add on by manufacturers under the "Fuel Efficient" banner which when it fails costs you more than you have saved.

Mine doesn't have it or an EGR system yet conforms to emissions requirements and does the same MPG as one that has.

It will obviously need sorting but in the short term I don't think it will cause any problems unless you notice a significant increase in fuel consumption.

Thanks for your reply. I havent noticed any change in fuel cosumption. Its still the same. Its drives the same nice and quiet. But i dont know if the guy at Lexus was trying to make me spend my money but he did say the worse that will happen is the car will sound louder and louder.

Problem with not replacing the part is the EML light will stay on and under the new MOT rules 2012 any dashboard warning lights illuminated that relate to the cars safe function whilst driving, automatic fail.

This is now strictly adhered to and looking at the labour cost of replacement one can see why any Mot station welcomes these new rules

As for the MOT side of things i can agree with, it is not just things that are considered a failure of safe function they fail them on.

Mate at work had uprated his lights (2yrs ago, so they have had 2 MOT passes) to make them brighter and him more visible, the road ahead was more visible, but as the parts were of "non standard factory fitted", no canbus error or warning on the dash, the car failed it's MOT, but passed when he replaced the older less efficient lighting.

The MOT chap said it was not lights, but the fact the lenses did not have washer / wiper or self leveling device fitted.

So before you LS430 goes for MOT check the washers and self leveling of your lights as they will.

Ah you have all fallen into the trap when they talk about safety, you have all assumed its Road Safety they are talking about when in fact its the safety of their bank accounts being heavily in the black that the safety issue is all about. Mike

Thank you for all your coments guys. I have a friend who works for mercedes and he put my ls430 on their computer. I was there so i saw what it said on the computer. It said code p1051 o2 sensor bank 1 and 2. So do you guys this Lexus were trying to rip me of with the vsv thing? He reset it for me and said take the car for a 10 min spin, if the eml comes on again, bring it in and ill put it on the computer again just to make sure it is the o2 sensors. So i did that, after around 10 mins the light came on again, again the computer found 2 faults o2 sensors bank 1 and 2.

I dont think that anyone was insinuating that Lexus were trying to rip you off as this is born out by the fact that your friends computer showed there was indeed a fault with that particular components. I think what was being said was that many of the things that are now designed into engines and engine management systems are next to useless and have no real safety value or even provide the car with a more efficient fuel saving policy. What was said that the MOT now requires that this or that light must work or not as its part of the vehicle safety system but that's not the case as in your case. The MOT is to ensure that your car is safe to use on the road and the component that is failing in your car has nothing to do with the safety of the car.

You can see now how manufacturers of cars love these things within the MOT and are hardened lobbyists in parliament to make sure they are included in the MOT thus giving the main dealerships lots more lucrative work. Mike

The VSV fault code is P1651 and you have P1051 so it could have been an honest mistake by the Lexus dealer seeing the 0 as a 6.

At least the O2 sensor is a lot cheaper and more accessible.

Please also remember fault codes are a diagnostic aid they are not always necessarily accurate to one particular component so should be taken as a guide only, as an example in this case it could be the O2 sensor or it could be a wiring fault to this sensor.

Thanks for your coments. I saw the code myself as he was doing the diagonostic on my car at mercedes dealers and did see the code and underneath the code it read o2 sensor bank and bank 2. Like steve said it could have been an honest mistake by lexus. Ive got a price for the sensors for £182 each.

Does anyone have the part numbers for bank 1 and 2 o2 sensors? According to Lexus the o2 sensors are all the same but just have different part numbers.

2000 -2003 Part nos front OS LH 89465-50120 RH 89465-50130 Rear OS 89465-50140 x 2

2003 -2006 Part nos front OS same as 2000-2003 rear OS 89465-50160 x 2

You can test the oxygen sensors by resistance but you will need the workshop manual for the procedure and paremeters.

Reviving old thread. But I need to clarify one thing for new people who come accross this thread.

The EML is not an MOT failure. It was a misconception back in 2012 when the new rules were implemented.

As long as the car passes the emission tests it will be fine, and an advisory will be issued for the EML, not a fail.
