Cam Belt In North Shropshire

Recommended Posts

When I bought my car I knew she needed a cam belt sooner rather than later. I have just had a quote for cam belt, tensioner, pulleys and water pump from Toyota in Shrewsbury, £807!!!!!

Can anyone recommend a local mechanic who will do a good job for a bit less please?

Many thanks, Mark.

Ouch !!

I paid £320 for belt and waterpump although I suspect they didn't do the tensioners as Lexus mechanics don't seem to for some reason. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near you so not much help, sorry.

Thanks for the rapid reply. They told me that the cambelt and tensioner/pulleys come as a kit and they had been in touch with Lexus Wolverhampton for advice. I think I will have to be prepared to travel a bit to get the job done, but obviously not to Toyota Shrewsbury!!! That price included my 10% parts and labour discount as I have membership of the Toyota scheme since having some big jobs on my Land Cruiser some years ago. Phew!!!

There ya go. Have a drive up to Yorkshire, meet a fellow member and a mini break all rolled into one.

Ps Dale when mine comes due again will that price still stand :-)

yes Pete I dont see why not, I get the kits from the USA hence the low price. we get ripped off in the UK for Lexus parts

That's just amazing, how we consistently allow all those involved in constantly ripping us off beyond comprehension I'm always pleased to hear of people like yourself importing from the States etc. Mike

Thanks Dale. As Mike says its good to see people not putting up with daft prices.

Are you Lexus trained or just really good with cars?

The reason I ask is that my old Lexie does loads of miles so things wear out and need replacing. If you were up for doing repairs I would rather give you the cash than someone else.

Ps if you have any tips on how to get the coils off a Mk3 I would love to know lol.

hi Pete I'm a mechanic by trade, I don't specialise in Lexus but know my way around them, I take on all makes of car.

Are you doing both coils? there's no trick really, the one on the bank near the airbox is quite easy to get to once you remove the air box and engine cover. the one near the Battery is a little fiddly, you will need the engine cover, Battery, air box removed to get a good look at it. on each coil the wiring loom is a little short so it's tight access to get your fingers on the plugs. a 10mm socket on a 1/4 ratchet and you'll be fine, just try not to drop the bolts!

I'd have thought a saving of £450 and you would have a very happy trip to another part of this beautiful country and knowing the time had saved you loadsa dosh too. :hehe:

Bolts? I thought it was the four screws on the top to remove.....this is probably where I'm going wrong! I did try and see below the coil but couldn't see a thing! Being ham fisted probably doesn't help.

And yes I've got both coils waiting to go on. Shame your not closer. Actually where are you based for future reference?

Ah yes thats where you're going wrong, the screws are awkward to get out as they usually rust in the bracket. you only want to have a go at them screws when you have the coil on a workbench. You need to remove the 10mm bolts.

Im Near Pontefract West Yorkshire.

My advice to you is to move to the south coast, and may I suggest somewhere like the Brighton area, you know it makes sense.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for your offer, it is a good excuse to go back to Yorkshire, I haven't been for a few years. It would be nice for a night away from the kids with Er Indoors too but I.m not sure that the kids can be trusted not to bicker if left on their own!!!!

How about some time the week after next, I'm a teacher and it's half term.

Look forward to hearing from you, all the best, Mark.

Thanks for that info Dale much appreciated. Is it just a case of feeling about below the coil? I've been hunting for a picture in order to try and get a reference to work from.

Cheers

Pete.

Finally got coils changed over and............................

Ofcouse it hasn't made any difference!

Back to the LPG place again.

Have to say I'm getting a bit fed up and disheartened with this damn saga, and I expect you lot are sick of it too lol.

I might just see how much injectors cost and change them myself!

Thanks for that Mike, that's very kind of you.

However I'm about 160 miles from peterborough so its not practical at present. If I remember rightly I heard that worsley auto gas are a good firm so I should get my but over to see them. My problem is that I feel I shouldn't let the guy who did the install off the hook whilst I incur even more expense that I really afford.

I will give him one last chance, then its complaint time if its not fixed.

Your welcome. I completely understand your stance where the installer should not be left of the hook. You are in a real dilemma, I hope you manage to sort it soon so you can enjoy your motoring 100%.

Sorry about diverting the thread. Mike
