Ever Fancied A Smart Car?

Recommended Posts

This is the result of making a soft top car from plastic panels after a head on collision with a people carrier.

That's why I drive a Lexus!

And the other vehicle involved.

I've deleted and then reloaded those pictures,I can obviously see them and so can Stuart what am I doing wrong?

"A picture says a thousand words" so no I'm not writing a description of the damage other than the Smart car's windscreen surround is 6 inches from the rear (C pillar?) :)

They work for me !

Scary. Very scary. Brings to mind when I was unlucky enough to have a Metro 114 for a weekend, that felt like driving a tin coffin where the slightest impact would fold it in half. It's sad that modern cars are so much heavier than what I started driving in (Astra Mk1 1.6 with 90bhp but light enough for 100 bhp/tonne) but at least we have more chance of living through accidents.

My daughter wanted a classic, original shaped mini. I love them to bits and they are great fun, but I'm an ex fireman and have dealt with the results of accidents too many times, so no, no and thrice no. I've seen a crash test on a Smart and it came off quite well, so I'm a bit surprised at that photo

The crash tests are man made in laboratory conditions and fail to reflect real life senarios.

If both cars were travelling at 50 MPH and collided head on the impact speed is effectively 100 MPH, never seen a car crash tested at that speed!

You think smart cars are bad ? Have you ever seen a G Wizz car after a crash , they disintegrate !!!!! Should never be on the roads .....they are not crash tested at all.

Owned four smarts now, including a rare brabus...huge fun, wonderful to own, will I have another....? Most probably yes...the older cars came from development in the ninties and as such are, I would say, slightly better than most older superminis wit their tridion integrated roll cage...one can't test for every eventuality and perhaps pictures in your first picture was an unusual smash, or worse luck scenarios....I have never felt unsafe driving any of my four tens of thousands of miles across the country. Best advice for safety in accidents....pay attention and avoid them!

I tried 2 Smart cars the other weekend as the wife wants something smaller rather than driving the SC 4 miles a day. Will keep the SC.

I could never live with the auto box on the Smart seemed like an age between the changes even if you put it in manual mode. Did wonder if it was the first one we drove so tested a Brahbus as well.

Now thinking about something else

The gearboxes are awful left in auto....and I have a theory they contribute to some cars early demise as they allow the car to rev way to high when cold....using the tiptronic lever or paddles if fitted and exercising a small lift when changing, I really think the changes are as smooth as a usual manual and no slower...this technique takes time though...I am fairly certain al have another at some point...

I agree with the above post.about being a safe driver and attentative driver, but unfortunatley that some drivers around us are not, jumping red lights, tailgating, driving with no lights on at night etc are commonplace.this morning left home to use the A6 towards Leiceste,to find the road closed ahead of me,ive just now read one man was killed and three injured after the drivers BMW X6 left the road and went down a ditch, there was another car involved,no details as yet.But going back to topic,I would always want to be in a highly safety rated car over anyother.

I also own a smart four two (mostly for my wife to drive) and agree with George's comments, especially concerning the use of paddles (or gear lever) to change up smoothly rather than waiting for the slow witted and jerky auto to do it. but it is very good at changing down, so I only use one paddle. Mine has the more powerful engine and is surprisingly quick (but thirsty) around town. I do quite like it as a fun car, although the ride is very poor indeed on bumpy city streets, not helped by fat low profile Brabus alloys which it came with as a used car. And the lights and fittings are quite poor. VED is £110 pa. My Lexus is £10 pa and is noticeably less thirsty, at least around town

My brabus got around 40 mpg round town, usually nearer 45, and aprox 50 on runs, once as much as 58 over almost 600 miles, which I think is pretty good for a specialist engine with 700 cc and Well over 100 hp a litre...dumped in a package you couldn't help putting the whoosh button down in...ALL THE TIME....still miss it....roadster for me next time....although we have a reliable, tidy bmw z3 roadster so I guess a smart on top of that would be a bit of an indulgence...
