  1. There is a vid showing the replacement of the bushings in the control arms pressed in and out with a bearing press.
  2. Your fears can be further reduced knowing you have the best built car of its time.
  3. Got a spare one here they just thread into the holder you have pm me with your address and I will send it at postage cost.
  4. Update on my wayward satnav, purchased a replacement unit off ebay which had a tatty case but at £30 worth it, just swapped over the gubbins into my mint case and hey presto job done tested today and everything is fine. The reader in the boot is always the prime suspect if the gps signal is showing on the display as most of the action is taking place in the reader, The disc can be the problem if it is marred or dirty but if it mint it will not be the cause.
  5. Vlad The external application of this stuff is frowned upon by MOT stations and they will fail the car if it hides brake pipes so it is not marketed much in the UK. You can apply anti rust treatment internally that is safe (Waxoyl etc) and the factory applied under body seal should protect the car unless it has been scratched or stone chipped on exposed edges in which case you can purchase brush on stone chip to seal those areas after cleaning them up.
  6. Phil Ebay are not hopeless they are downright negligent in their duties and their customer protection policy is a joke. They are only interested in the bottom line and as a note of caution do not sell anything overseas because the system stinks I recently sold a couple of items in Spain and Portugal and the buyers claimed mis-selling It was not but the local ebay who takes over decided in their favour so they got free items because I was made responsible for postage and it was not worth it despite my terms saying no returns. They are not the company of twenty years ago and I rarely sell on there as it is also expensive.
  7. That is probably the finest example on the planet and as been refurbed to factory condition looks like all the usual faults on the mark 1 have been addressed so quite a lot of time and money is invested.
  8. Hi Pete The condensation theory has crossed my mind but the boot is dry and as never been wet so I doubt that being the cause.I stripped the unit down and checked the head lens and it was crystal clear .The likely cause is a sticking drive because the page freezes but the distance to target still operates ,this means the gps is working and computing but the information is not being sent too and from the disc. The intermittent nature of the problem means it sets up ok runs for about ten miles and then freezes and requires a complete reboot to start again.
  9. I have decided to try another player as the disc is in perfect condition ,another option sprung to mind as I perused the auction sites . The cd player unit in the boot is exactly the same as the dvd player in the 430 with all the same plugs I was wondering if its possible to use that player and improve the functions of the navigation system in the 97-2000 400.
  10. Had a couple of recent incidents were the satnav display as frozen and the operation stops, the displays shows caption when restarted check cd-rom cannot read cd- rom. I have taken out the player and accessed the laser cleaned it and re-installed it is now functioning properly but I do not know if the cd is failing checked ebay and they are not available. I cannot see this player having an intermittent fault usually cd players work or don't ,I am wondering if anyone else as had this problem in the past.
  11. I locked my keys in the boot in a similar fashion in Devon last year and the Green flag local garage came and said he would struggle getting in the car. He used two inflatable rubber cushions on the top door edge in alternate sequence until there was enough room to insert a wire to catch the drivers door internal handle it took about ten minutes and there was no damage to paint or the mechanisms. Since that unfortunate episode I have secreted the valet key in the chassis of the car so I never lock myself out again.
  12. Those examples on that site are superb and are a retro bargain if someone is looking to buy a classic car I am intrigued that one of them as gps fitted in a 93 and it looks original.
  13. I think you will find the object is in the tray below the opening roof this tray catches the water that comes in through the rubber surround and drains away through drains to the front and rear of the roof. It could be a foreign object that as got in when the roof was open and cannot get out because the sides are raised on the tray. You can get at the tray by lowering the front of the headliner because the tray is lower than the glass and there is a gap at the front of the tray which you may be able to see what it is.
  14. Jonathan on the contrary I don't think any of us 400 owners are going to be upset by your update and we appreciate you making us feel better.
  15. To be honest I think I will be sticking to my mark 4 on that update, aside of the three year warranty which you would have paid for in the purchase price that little bill would have been around £5K which is £1250 more than I paid for my car and I have spent nothing on repairs or replacement parts. I am not knocking your decision for the original purchase or degenerating the outcome but when it comes to low cost upkeep and maintenance the earlier Lexus LS models beat the crap out of the later models because there is less to go wrong and they were built better.
  16. I did it on mark 4 but the plate dropped off whilst visiting a friend and I drove 240 miles without a front plate and he posted it back to me as I did not notice it had fell off. I suggest you use the nylon screws as the tape gets a lot of weather and windage on the front.
  17. You are correct the box just controls the operation the removal of the steering column shroud behind the wheel and the bottom panel in the footwell is easy just a series of screws.
  18. They have two motors one retracts and one swivels the column and there is a post on the US site that deals with the issue ,if I recollect correctly the issue was gunged up worm drive and the introduction of a home made spacer so the gear engaged properly.
  19. The key fob should work at least up to six metres distant from the car depending on what orientation to the front you are . That is the alarm immobiliser the ignition immobiliser may only work within the cabin of the vehicle for safety reasons.
  20. The coaxial cable was fitted in the factory with the rest of the wiring looms so that if the customer wanted a phone the phone installer would not be tearing apart a brand new Lexus ,the phones were an option and probably less than 20% of new 400's had them fitted.
  21. The coaxial was standard factory fit in the boot for a phone transceiver which was usually fitted at the dealership. It was fitted to the right side on the Mark 4 because the left side was taken up by the disc player for the satnav and as we know the mark 3 did not have satnav.
  22. There are a multitude of different sealant you could use any sealant you apply may have to come off again should you need to replace the windscreen . Sikaflex make a marine grade black sealant that is waterproof and is under a tenner Reference ; Sikaflex 291i .
  23. I went for that same colour and 98 year the colour was not my first choice but the car was mint and only 20k miles,I have had it eight years now and it is superb and as given me little or no problem and is still mint far better in every way than my mark 1.
